Genomic and phenotypic characterization of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Reading isolates involved in a turkey-associated foodborne outbreak
Salmonella is a global bacterial foodborne pathogen associated with a variety of contaminated food products. Poultry products are a common source of Salmonella-associated foodborne illness, and an estimated 7% of human illnesses in the United States are attributed to turkey products. From November 2017 to March 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a turkey-associated outbreak of multidrug-resistant (MDR; resistant to ≥3 antimicrobial classes) Salmonella enterica serovar Reading (S. Reading) linked to 358 human infections in 42 US states and Canada. Since S. Reading was seldom linked to human il...

CDC Warns of Low Vaccination Rates Amid Spike in Respiratory Diseases
From November to December 2023, US hospitalization rates increased by 200% for influenza, 51% for COVID-19, and 60% for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) among all age groups, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory. Amid growing concern, the CDC issued the advisory about the low vaccination rates for all 3 respiratory illnesses and developed a vaccination conversation guide with talking points to help clinicians encourage uptake. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSUMMARYNeisseria gonorrhoeae infection is an important public health issue, with an annual global incidence of 87 million. N. gonorrhoeae infection causes significant morbidity and can have serious long-term impacts on reproductive and neonatal health and may rarely cause life-threatening disease. Global rates of N. gonorrhoeae infection have increased over the past 20 years. Importantly, rates of antimicrobial resistance to key antimicrobials also continue to increase, with the United States Centers for Disease Control and P...

A National Approach to Promoting Health Equity in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention: Implementation Science Strengths, Opportunities, and a Changing Chronic Disease Context
AbstractIn the USA, structural racism contributes to higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) including hypertension, heart disease, and stroke among African American persons. Evidence-based interventions (EBIs), which include programs, policies, and practices, can help mitigate health inequities, but have historically been underutilized or misapplied among communities experiencing discrimination and exclusion. This commentary on the special issue ofPrevention Science, “Advancing the Adaptability of Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Through Implementation Science,” describes the Centers for Disease Control ...

Trends in Premature Mortality from Acute Myocardial Infarction in American Indians/Alaska Natives in the United States from 1999 to 2020
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) groups. They are disproportionately found to have a higher rate of premature myocardial infarction (MI). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research were queried to identify premature MI deaths (female (Source: The American Journal of Cardiology)

Updates on Improving Imaging Modalities for Traumatic Brain Injury
J Integr Neurosci. 2023 Oct 23;22(6):142. doi: 10.31083/j.jin2206142.ABSTRACTThe Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that traumatic brain injury (TBI) was related to over 64,000 deaths in the United States in 2020, equating to more than 611 TBI-related hospitalizations and 176 TBI-related deaths per day. There are both long- and short-term sequelae involved with the pathophysiology of TBI that can range from mild to severe. Recently, more effort has been devoted to understanding the long-term consequences of TBI and how early detection of these injuries can prevent late clinical manifestations. Obtaining prop...
