Informing Equitable Prevention Practices: A Statewide Disaggregated Analysis of Suicide for Ethnoracially Minoritized Adolescents
This study examined disaggregated state-level data over time to determine changes to suicide outcomes based on race/ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, and the intersection of these identities and determined which sub-groups had higher odds of suicide outcomes. Data from the 1991 –2019 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System were analyzed for 17,419 ethnoracially minoritized high school adolescents in North Carolina. Descriptive analyses and multinominal logistic regression models were employed. Findings indicated that subgroups within categories of ethnoracial populations, sp...

International panel calls for tighter oversight of risky pathogen studies
Research on dangerous human pathogens is essential to protect people from epidemics and pandemics, but safety rules for such work need to be tighter and more consistent around the world, according to a report released today by a broad international task force launched in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. “All countries must look carefully at pathogen security, and we hope our report provides a universal framework,” said co-chair Ravindra Gupta, a virologist at the University of Cambridge. The report drew praise from scientists who acknowledge the risks of some types of virological experiments but worry...

Methodologies to Advance Health Equity and Reduce Health Inequities in Nursing Research
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention affirm that health equity is only achieved when everyone has opportunities to attain full health potential without disadvantages related to social position or socially determined circumstances. To reduce health inequities in nursing research, researchers must increase diversity in study samples and ensure that study participants are representative of all populations in the United States. Identifying effective methods for recruiting underrepresented populations must be a thoughtful and reflective component of every research methodology. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Health Care)

Stroke-associated pneumonia according to mCDC criteria: impact on prognosis and antibiotic therapy
The objective was to investigate the impact of SAP on stroke outcome depending on whether or not it conforms to mCDC criteria. Our secondary objective was to identify the responsible factors for antibiotic initiation in stroke patients.MethodsWe conducted a prospective, multicenter, observational study of ischemic stroke patients with moderate to severe stroke (NIHSS≥4) admitted within 24 h. For 7 days, mCDC criteria were assessed daily, and infections and antibiotics were recorded. Pneumonias were divided into those fulfilling mCDC criteria (mCDC-SAP) or not (other pneumonias, OPn). The effect of each type of pneumoni...

CDC Tracking BA.2.87.1, New Omicron Subvariant With Potential to Evade Immunity
Experts detected a strain of SARS-CoV-2 with more than 30 changes in its spike protein compared with Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced. The newer Omicron subvariant, known as BA.2.87.1, has infected at least 9 people in South Africa since September 2023. No cases have been reported in the US or outside South Africa, the CDC noted in its update. (Source: JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association)

Safety of Simultaneous Administration of Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 and Influenza Vaccines in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS)
DiscussionReports of AEs following co-administration of bivalent mRNA COVID-19 and seasonal influenza vaccines did not reveal any unusual  or unexpected patterns of AEs. Increased reporting of certain events (e.g., COVID-19) was expected due to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting requirements. CDC and FDA will continue to monitor the safety of co-administration of mRNA CO VID-19 and seasonal influenza vaccines. (Source: Drug Safety)

Best Practices for Hormonal Contraception and Menopause Therapy in Women at Increased Risk for Breast Cancer
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe present review critically assesses contemporary evidence characterizing the association between hormonal contraception (HC) and/or menopausal hormone replacement therapy (MHT) and breast cancer risk in patients considered “high risk.”Recent FindingsProspective studies of hormonal contraception methods for BRCA 1 mutation carriers do not demonstrate an association between combined oral contraceptives (COC) and hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, findings consistent with those seen from systematic reviews evaluating this risk in patients with a family history of breast cancer. The Center...

Planning for Program Evaluation Improves Implementation and Assessment
This article offers a general approach to plan and implement an educational program by illustrating the evaluation process and data from the AGE-ADAR Scholars Program. A well-designed program evaluation will also include a plan for stakeholder dissemination. We adapted a framework from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which includes hard and soft outcomes. Hard outcomes include improved academic metrics, including test scores and graduation rates. Soft outcomes include changes in students' attitudes, particularly those related to reduced ageism as well as readiness to pursue graduate study. While our hard and...

New Prevention Guidance for Antibiotic-Resistant Meningococcal Cases
Physicians prescribe the antibiotic ciprofloxacin to prevent meningococcal disease among close contacts of people with confirmed illnesses. But cases of meningococcal disease caused by ciprofloxacin-resistant bacteria have risen over the past decade, leading the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to recently announce new guidance.
