Overview of U.S. COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance systems
This report describes the U.S. government's COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring systems and programs used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Indian Health Service. Using the adverse event of myocarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination as a model, we demonstrate how the multiple, complementary monitoring systems worked to rapidly detect, assess, and verify a vaccine safety signal. In addition, longer-term follow-up was conducted to evaluate the recovery status of myocarditis cases following vaccin...

Climate emergency and decent work
The climate crisis and loss of biodiversity, two closely related threats to human and planetary health, meet the criteria for the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare an international public health emergency, as occurred with COVID-19 (1), and urged by numerous scientific journals (2). Attaining decent work, understood as “opportunities for women and men to work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity” (3), in the context of the climate emergency, creates a paradox for worker health. Outdoor workers (notably those in agriculture and construction), many of them informal workers, are among th...

The Evolution of Genetic Testing from Focused Testing to Panel Testing and from Patient Focused to Population Testing: Are We There Yet?
Clin Colon Rectal Surg. 2023 Jul 19;37(3):133-139. doi: 10.1055/s-0043-1770381. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTThe field of cancer genetics has evolved significantly over the past 30 years. Genetic testing has become less expensive and more comprehensive which has changed practice patterns. It is no longer necessary to restrict testing to those with the highest likelihood of testing positive. In addition, we have learned that the criteria developed to determine who has the highest likelihood of testing positive are neither sensitive nor specific. As a result, the field is moving from testing only the highest risk patients id...

Measles Outbreaks in US and Abroad Prompt CDC Vaccination Alert
Amid an uptick in measles cases and outbreaks both in the US and abroad, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an alert on March 18 encouraging clinicians to work with schools and educators to ensure children are up-to-date on their measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccines. As of March 28, 97 measles cases had been reported in 18 US states this year. Most of the cases have been linked to international travel. (Source: JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association)

ASTRONOMY Scientists flock to the eclipse Tens of millions in North America turned their specially protected eyes to the skies on 8 April for several minutes of darkness when the Moon blocked the disk of the Sun, casting a shadow across Mexico, 15 U.S. states, and Canada. Researchers and citizen scientists seized the opportunity to study the corona—the wispy, outer layer of the Sun’s atmosphere—from the ground and in eclipse-chasing aircraft. They expected to see loops of plasma and other solar flares because the eclipse coincided with solar maximum, a period of high magnetic activity. Research...

Building a New Generation of Public Health Leaders Forged in a Public Health Crisis
Am J Public Health. 2024 Apr 11:e1-e7. doi: 10.2105/AJPH.2024.307633. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic presented wide-ranging leadership challenges to public health leaders and public health organizations. In its wake, as the necessity of reconstructing public health and modernizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is considered, we reviewed reports from the Commonwealth Fund and the CDC and other leadership-focused literature to identify common themes for a new generation of public health leaders. We posit that this new generation must have the ability to communicate (build and maint...
