Theorizing Pathways Between Eviction Filings and Increased Mortality Risk
Evictions have become recognized as important social determinants of individual and community health, largely due to the revelatory work of Desmond in the past decade. During the COVID-19 pandemic, evictions became a major public health topic as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a federal moratorium on evictions that lasted from September 4, 2020, through August 26, 2021. The moratorium was instituted with the intention to limit COVID-19 transmission by preventing homelessness and overcrowded housing conditions. Many local and regional jurisdictions also issued their own eviction moratoria that ov...

Achieving Health Equity: To Go Forward We Must Look Back
As a child accompanying my pediatrician father rounding on newborn babies in the hospital, I (L.W.) asked why the White babies were plump and with their parents in the room, and the Black babies were tiny and in incubators. This was my first lesson on disparities in health care. Sadly, more than 50 years since the lessons my father taught me about lack of access to quality prenatal care and good nutrition and discrimination by providers toward pregnant people, our outcomes are not much better. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in 2021, the maternal mortality rate among Black women was nearly 70 ...

Efficacy of therapeutically administered gepotidacin in a rabbit model of inhalational anthrax
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Feb 15:e0149723. doi: 10.1128/aac.01497-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacillus anthracis is a Gram-positive Centers for Disease Control and Prevention category "A" biothreat pathogen. Without early treatment, inhalation of anthrax spores with progression to inhalational anthrax disease is associated with high fatality rates. Gepotidacin is a novel first-in-class triazaacenaphthylene antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA replication by a distinct mechanism of action and is being evaluated for use against biothreat and conventional pathogens. Gepotidacin selectively inhibits bacterial D...
