The weight of BMI in impacting postoperative and oncologic outcomes in pancreaticoduodenectomy is attenuated by a robotic approach
This study was undertaken to observe the effect of body mass index (BMI) on perioperative outcomes and survival when comparing robotic vs ‘open’ pancreaticoduodenectomy. With IRB approval, we prospectively followed 505 consecutive patients who underwent either robotic or ‘open’ pancreaticoduodenectomy from 2012 to 2021. For illustrative purposes, patients were separated based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention BM I table but regression analysis was utilized to identify significant relationships involving BMI. Data are presented as median (mean ± SD). Significance was determined atp ≤ 0.05. ...

Assessing the temporal and cause-effect relationship between myocarditis and mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. A retrospective observational study.
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, and if it is accompanied by pericarditis, it is referred to as myopericarditis; in both cases, the body's immune system is causing inflammation in response to an infection or some other trigger. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the term “myocarditis” refers to myocarditis, pericarditis, or myopericarditis [1]. Myocarditis typically occurs more commonly in males than females, and the incidence is highest among infants, adolescents, and young adults [2–4]. Racial/ethnic differences in the bullying victimization-suicidality link among LGBQ high school students in the United States
This study examines associations between bullying victimization and suicidal behaviors across racial/ethnic groups in a sample of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) students. Data for this cross-sectional study were derived from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey combined data set (2003-2019), with a sample of 95,603 students who identified as LGBQ. Analyses included descriptive statistics and logistic regression. We found that homophobic bullying victimization was associated with higher odds of suicidal ideation and plans among the total sample and Black and Hispanic stu...

Regenerative Medicine and Nanotechnology approaches against Cardiovascular Diseases: Recent Advances and Future Prospective
Curr Stem Cell Res Ther. 2024 Feb 9. doi: 10.2174/011574888X263530230921074827. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRegenerative medicine refers to medical research focusing on repairing, replacing, or regenerating damaged or diseased tissues or organs. Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) is a significant health issue globally and is the leading cause of death in many countries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one person dies every 34 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular diseases, and according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of d...

COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Technical (VaST) Work Group: Enhancing vaccine safety monitoring during the pandemic
This report provides an overview of the organization and activities of VaST, summarizes data reviewed as part of the comprehensive effort to monitor vaccine safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlights selected actions taken by CDC, ACIP, and FDA in response to accumulating post-authorization safety data. VaST convened regular meetings over the course of 29 months, from November 2020 through April 2023; through March 2023 FDA issued EUAs for six COVID-19 vaccines from four different manufacturers and subsequently licensed two of these COVID-19 vaccines. The independent vaccine safety experts collaborated with federa...

A Practical Approach to Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening for the Primary Care Clinician
Med Clin North Am. 2024 Mar;108(2):267-278. doi: 10.1016/j.mcna.2023.08.014. Epub 2023 Sep 14.ABSTRACTSexually transmitted infections (STIs) are commonly encountered in primary care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Preventive Services Task Force have both issued guidelines about screening for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV. By eliciting a sexual history, understanding their patients' anatomy, and considering factors which may increase the likelihood of STIs and their sequelae, clinicians can implement a practical, evidence-based approach to STI screening.PMID:38331479 | DOI:10.1016/j.mcna...

Workshop Summary: Building an NHANES for the Future
Am J Clin Nutr. 2024 Feb 6:S0002-9165(24)00068-6. doi: 10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.02.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe American Society for Nutrition (ASN)'s Committee on Advocacy and Science Policy (CASP) organized a workshop, "Building a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for the Future", held during NUTRITION 2023, which took place in Boston, Mass. in July 2023. CASP had already identified an urgent need for increased support and modernization to ensure that a secure future for NHANES is achievable. The survey faces challenges associated with data collection, stagnant funding, and a need for more ...

Understanding New Recommendations for Respiratory Syncytial Virus Prevention in Pregnancy
Obstet Gynecol. 2024 Feb 8. doi: 10.1097/AOG.0000000000005524. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide with peak hospitalization rates for RSV-mediated illnesses between 2 and 3 months of life. Until very recently, prevention strategies for RSV involved primarily passive immunization of neonates at high risk with monoclonal antibodies and promotion of breastfeeding. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices now recommends passive immunization of all neonates with monoclonal an...
