Efficacy and safety of co-trimoxazole in eradication phase of melioidosis; systematic review
Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. The two stages of melioidosis treatment are the intense intravenous phase and the oral eradication phase. Although co-trimox... (Source: Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials)

Intranasal immunization with a Bucl8-based vaccine ameliorates bacterial burden and pathological inflammation, and promotes an IgG2a/b dominant response in an outbred mouse model of Burkholderia infection
In this study, we hypothesized that an intranasally administered L1-CRM197 vaccine would induce protective mucosal immunity. To evaluate vaccine efficacy, we developed a surrogate Burkholderia infection model that employs outbred CD-1 mice which imitates the immunogenetic diversity of humans. Mice were immunized with either L1-CRM197 adjuvanted with fluorinated cyclic diguanosine monophosphate (FCDG) or with FCDG-only control. These mice were then challenged intranasally with an infectious dose of a luminescent strain of B. thailandensis E264 two weeks post-immunization, and correlates of protection were assessed in euthan...

Rational design of an acidic erythritol (ACER) medium for the enhanced isolation of the environmental pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei from soil samples
In conclusion, our newly developed ACER medium significantly improves the isolation of viable B. pseudomallei from soils and, thereby, has the potential to reduce the rate of false-negative environmental cultures in melioidosis risk areas. (Source: Frontiers in Microbiology)

Epidemiology of Pathogens Listed as Potential Bioterrorism Agents, the Netherlands, 2009 ‒2019
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Jul;29(7):1-9. doi: 10.3201/eid2907.221769.ABSTRACTWe provide incidences (cases/10 million persons) in the Netherlands during 2009-2019 for pathogens listed as potential bioterrorism agents. We included pathogens from the highest categories of the European Medicines Agency or the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Notifiable diseases and recently published data were used to calculate the average annual incidence. Coxiella burnetii had the highest incidence because of a Q fever epidemic during 2007-2010. Incidence then decreased to 10.8 cases/. Pathogens with an incidence >1 were Brucel...

Lactonase-mediated inhibition of quorum sensing largely alters phenotypes, proteome, and antimicrobial activities in Burkholderia thailandensis E264
This study provides evidence that QS is of prime interest when it comes to understanding the virulence of Burkholderia species and developing alternative treatments. (Source: Frontiers in cellular and infection microbiology)

Case Report: Vagal Nerve Neuritis Associated with Pulmonary Melioidosis Provides Potential Insights into the Pathophysiology of Neuromelioidosis
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 May 15:tpmd220694. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.22-0694. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEncephalomyelitis is the most frequent manifestation of neuromelioidosis in Australia. It is hypothesized that Burkholderia pseudomallei causes encephalomyelitis after entering the brain directly, if complicating a scalp infection, or after traveling to the brain within peripheral or cranial nerves. A 76-year-old man presented with fever, dysphonia, and hiccups. Chest imaging demonstrated extensive bilateral pneumonia with mediastinal lymphadenopathy, blood cultures isolated B. pseudomallei, and nasendoscopy confirmed a lef...
