Cannabis arteritis presenting with Raynaud ’s and digital ulcerations: a case-based review of a controversial thromboangiitis obliterans-like condition
AbstractThromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), or Buerger ’s disease, is a non-atherosclerotic inflammatory disease of the small and medium-sized arteries, veins, and nerves of the legs and arms, strongly associated with the use of tobacco products in young adults. Cannabis arteritis (CA), an entity with similar clinical and pathological features, has be en described in marijuana users as a subtype of TAO. Distinction between TAO and CA is challenging, given that most patients use tobacco and marijuana products concomitantly. Herein, we report the case of a male in his late forties who was referred to rheumatology with a 2-mo...

Usefulness of indocyanine green angiography in the intraoperative evaluation of recipient vessels for microsurgical lower extremity reconstruction in ischemic vasculopathy: Report of three cases
This report describes our experience with the intraoperative use of indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) for selecting recipient vessels in lower extremity free flap reconstruction cases. Three patients with lower extremity defects and ischemic vasculopathy underwent free flap reconstruction. Intraoperatively, the candidate vessels were evaluated using ICGA. In the first case, a 10 × 6 cm defect on the anterior side of the lower third of the leg caused by minor trauma and associated with peripheral arterial occlusive disease was reconstructed using a super-thin anterolateral thigh flap based on one perforator. In the seco...

Impact of (intestinal) LAL deficiency on lipid metabolism and macrophage infiltration
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that loss of LAL only in enterocytes is insufficient to cause lipid deposition in the SI, suggesting that infiltrating macrophages are the key players in this process.PMID:37182562 | DOI:10.1016/j.molmet.2023.101737 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

A comprehensive review of the epidemiology and clinical features of 91 cases with Buerger's disease
CONCLUSION: Some patients may experience mild, subtle symptoms for years before the initial signs and symptoms appear, which can be severe and rapidly progress to the point of requiring amputation. We suggest that the diagnostic criteria for Buerger's disease should be revised in light of the presence of atherosclerosis and its associated risk factors, which present a challenge in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Clinical experience will be of great importance in this regard.PMID:37172074 | DOI:10.1177/17085381231175257 (Source: Vascular)

Cervical spine fracture detection in computed tomography using convolutional neural networks
Phys Med Biol. 2023 May 11. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acd48b. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACT
In the context of primary in-hospital trauma management timely reading of computed tomography (CT) images is critical. However, assessment of the spine is time consuming, fractures can be very subtle, and the potential for under-diagnosis or delayed diagnosis is relevant.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly employed to assist radiologists with the detection of spinal fractures and prioritization of cases.
Currently, algorithms focusing on the cervical spine are commercially available.
A common appr...

The Ca < sup > 2+ < /sup > channel TRPV4 is dispensable for Ca < sup > 2+ < /sup > influx and cell volume regulation during hypotonic stress response in human keratinocyte cell lines
Cell Calcium. 2023 Mar 11;111:102715. doi: 10.1016/j.ceca.2023.102715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCell swelling as a result of hypotonic stress is counteracted in mammalian cells by a process called regulatory volume decrease (RVD). We have recently discovered that RVD of human keratinocytes requires the LRRC8 volume-regulated anion channel (VRAC) and that Ca2+ exerts a modulatory function on RVD. However, the ion channel that is responsible for Ca2+ influx remains unknown. We investigated in this study whether the Ca2+-permeable TRPV4 ion channel, which functions as cell volume sensor in many cell types, may be involve...
