Spectrum of comorbid autoimmune diseases in patients with chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis: a 17-year retrospective study of 215 patients in Asturias, northern Spain
ConclusionWe characterize, for the first time, the spectrum of CADs as well as age and gender distribution in patients with CN based on the largest cohort of patients to date. The possible accumulation of different disorders that are strongly associated with tobacco smoking (Buerger ’s disease, pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus erythematosus, and others) merits further investigation, but the rarity of some of them makes this challenging. Buerger Disease: Pathological Changes in Elderly Patients
Ann Vasc Dis. 2022 Mar 25;15(1):29-36. doi: 10.3400/avd.oa.21-00142.ABSTRACTReports of vascular lesion changes in elderly Buerger disease patients are rare. Patients are expected to continue to have typical Buerger disease even after the age of 50. However, after 50, when patients suffer from atherosclerotic risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or hyperlipidemia, what kind of changes will occur? We will report on 3 cases of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or hyper lipidemia after or around 50 years of age. As a result, atherosclerosis was present in the iliac or aortic regions in the remaining thromboang...

An International Delphi Consensus on Diagnostic criteria for Buerger's disease
CONCLUSIONS: The current study demonstrated discrepancies in the various published diagnostic criteria for BD and their selective utilization in routine clinical practice worldwide. We propose that all published diagnostic criteria for BD be re-evaluated for harmonization and universal use.PMID:35398199 | DOI:10.1016/j.avsg.2022.03.028 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

An International Delphi Consensus on Diagnostic criteria for Buerger ’s disease
Buerger ’s disease (BD) remains a debilitating condition. Despite multiple published diagnostic criteria for BD, none is universally accepted as a gold standard. (Source: Annals of Vascular Surgery)

Viruses, Vol. 14, Pages 695: Emergence of Two Distinct SARS-CoV-2 Gamma Variants and the Rapid Spread of P.1-like-II SARS-CoV-2 during the Second Wave of COVID-19 in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil
This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus spreading patterns in the SC state from March 2020 to April 2021 using genomic surveillance. During this period, there were 23 distinct variants, including Beta and Gamma, among which the Gamma and related lineages were predominant in the second pandemic wave within SC. A regionalization of P.1-like-II in the Western SC region was observed, concomitant to the increase in cases, mortality, and the case fatality rate (CFR) index. This is the first evidence of the regionalization of the SARS-CoV-2 transmission in SC and it highlights the importance of tracking ...

Pathohistological characteristics of muscles in patients with chronic lower limb ischemia
CONCLUSION: The findings may suggest the universal mechanism for damage to striated muscle tissue because of circulatory hypoxia, regardless of its etiology and the common character of tissue compensatory-adaptive responses (regeneration).PMID:35166472 | DOI:10.17116/patol2022840115 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Estimate and Temporal Trends of Buerger Disease Hospitalizations in the United States
Buerger disease, also known as thromboangiitis obliterans, is a nonatherosclerotic inflammatory segmental vascular disease which commonly involves small- and medium-sized blood vessels.1 The disease, which was first described in 1879, has a very strong association with tobacco use.1,2 Nevertheless, the etiology and exact pathophysiology of the disease remain unknown.3 Because of similarities in clinical presentation with atherosclerotic and other inflammatory vascular diseases, Buerger disease commonly poses a clinical conundrum. Assessment of ethanol exposure from hand sanitizer use and potential for developmental toxicity in nursing infants
AbstractIngestion of ethanol during pregnancy is known to have detrimental effects on the fetus. Although the potential developmental effects of maternal ethanol intake during lactation are less well characterized, public health guidelines recommend avoidance of alcohol or, if alcohol is consumed, to allow for 1 –2 h to pass before nursing. A proposal to classify ethanol as potentially harmful to breast-fed children warrants an investigation of the potential adverse neurodevelopmental effects of low-dose ethanol exposure during lactation. There currently are no studies that have examined neurodevelopmen tal outcomes fr...

Impacts of diethylhexyl phthalate and overfeeding on physical fitness and lipid mobilization of Danio rerio (zebrafish)
This study investigated the hypothesis that co-exposure to DEHP and overfeeding would result in decreased lipid mobilization and physical fitness in Danio rerio (zebrafish). Four treatment groups were randomly assigned: Regular Fed (control, 10 mg/fish/day with 0 mg/kg DEHP), Overfed (20 mg/fish/day with 0 mg/kg DEHP), Regular Fed + DEHP (10 mg/fish/day with 3 mg/kg DEHP), Overfed + DEHP (20 mg/fish/day with 3 mg/kg DEHP). After 24 weeks, swim tunnel assays were conducted on half of the zebrafish from each treatment to measure critical swimming speeds (Ucrit); the other fish were euthanized without swimming. Body mass inde...
