Extracolonic tumours in a pedigree with EPCAM-related Lynch Syndrome
This report illustrates the existence of intrafamilial clinical heterogeneity among carriers of this EPCAM alteration, and hence the difficulty in predicting phenotype for EPCAM-associated Lynch syndrome.PMID:35367635 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejmg.2022.104479 (Source: European Journal of Medical Genetics)

The therapeutic potential of stem cell-derived exosomes in the ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer
Stem Cell Res Ther. 2022 Apr 1;13(1):138. doi: 10.1186/s13287-022-02811-5.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) therapy is a novel treatment strategy for cancer and a wide range of diseases with an excessive immune response such as ulcerative colitis (UC), due to its powerful immunomodulatory properties and its capacity for tissue regeneration and repair. One of the promising therapeutic options can focus on MSC-secreted exosomes (MSC-Exo), which have been identified as a type of paracrine interaction. In light of a wide variety of recent experimental studies, the present review aims to seek the recent research...

The Gut Microbiota Influenced by the Intake of Probiotics and Functional Foods with Prebiotics Can Sustain Wellness and Alleviate Certain Ailments like Gut-Inflammation and Colon-Cancer
Microorganisms. 2022 Mar 20;10(3):665. doi: 10.3390/microorganisms10030665.ABSTRACTThe gut microbiota is composed of several microbial strains, with diverse and variable combinations in healthy and sick persons, changing at different stages of life. A healthy balance between host and gut microorganisms must be maintained in order to perform the normal physiological, metabolic, and immune functions and prevent disease development. Disturbances in the balance of the gut microbiota by diverse reasons initiate several health issues and promote the progression of certain diseases. This review is based on published research and ...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 1497: Public Awareness of Bowel Cancer Risk Factors, Symptoms and Screening in Tasmania, Australia: A Cross-Sectional Study
This study measured awareness levels of bowel cancer risk factors, symptoms and screening in Tasmania. An online survey of 3703 participants aged 18 years and older found that alcohol consumption, low physical activity levels, and having diabetes were the least known risk factors for bowel cancer. Over half of all participants were unaware the risk of bowel cancer increased with age, and 53 percent were not confident they would notice a bowel cancer symptom. Over a third of survey respondents did not know that screening commenced at the age of 50. The results indicate that a targeted campaign to increase bowel cancer aware...

Prevalence and Spectrum of Predisposition Genes With Germline Mutations Among Chinese Patients With Bowel Cancer
Conclusion: Chinese patients with bowel cancer exhibited a distinct spectrum of germline variants, with distinct molecular characteristics such as TMB and DDR. Furthermore, the information on somatic mutations obtained from TCGA database indicated that a deeper understanding of the interactions among DDR and immune cells would be useful to further investigate the role of DDR in bowel cancer. Cancers, Vol. 14, Pages 469: Gall Bladder Disease and the Risk of Small Bowel Cancer & mdash; Results from a Nationwide Swedish Cohort Study
Conclusions: In this nationwide cohort study, GBD was associated with an increased risk of small bowel cancer. The excess risk of small bowel adenocarcinoma was mainly seen during the first years of follow-up while small bowel carcinoid risk peaked 11–16 years after GBD diagnosis. (Source: Cancers)

Colorectal resections during the COVID-19 pandemic: a national survey of practice during first lockdown
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates variability in the MDT management of colorectal cancer during the initial COVID-19 lockdown, incorporating adaptive patient behaviour and initially limited data on oncological safety profiles leading to challenging decision-making.PMID:34941446 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2021.0261 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)
