Assessing microbial stability and predicting biogas production in full-scale thermophilic dry methane fermentation of municipal solid waste
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Apr 29:130766. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130766. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCompared to typical anaerobic digestion processes, little is known about both sludge microbial compositions and biogas production models for full-scale dry methane fermentation treating municipal solid waste (MSW). The anaerobic sludge composed of one major hydrogenotrophic methanogen (Methanoculleus) and syntrophic acetate oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Caldicoprobacter), besides enrichment of MSW degraders such as Clostridia. The core population remained phylogenetically unchanged during the fermentation process, regardle...

Absorbing oxygen carriers promotes phosphorus recovery from sludge via the microwave thermal conversion process
This study aims to apply the Absorbing oxygen carriers (AOCs) to induce the migration and transformation of phosphorus compounds during the microwave thermal conversion of sludge so the hard-to-extract organic phosphorus (OP) can be converted to easy-to-extract inorganic phosphorus (IP) and be enriched onto the sludge char. The AOCs were recycled by screen separation from the IP-rich sludge char, with the latter being a renewable phosphorus source from sludge. The AOCs in this novel process enhanced the conversion efficiency of OP into non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAlP), which was further converted to apatite inorgani...

Effect of hydrothermal-acid pretreatment on methane yield and microbial community in anaerobic digestion of rice straw
This study identified optimal pretreatment at 120 °C with 3 % acetic acid for 24 h by orthogonal design method. The HTOAP increased the reducing sugar content by destroying the lignocellulosic structure. A 79 % increment of methane production after HTOAP was observed compared to the untreated group. Microbial analysis showed that HTOAP enriched the relative abundance of lignocellulose-degraders, such as W5053, Thermanaerovibrio, Caldicoprobacter, as well as the syntrophic acetate oxidizing bacteria Syntrophaceticus. Moreover, Methanobacterium conducted hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis dominantly. Furthermore, the potential...

Investigating the potential of mineral precipitation in co-pyrolysis biochar: Development of a novel Cd (II) adsorption material utilizing dual solid waste
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Apr 29:130762. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130762. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIonic cadmium (Cd (II)) in water is a significant threat to ecosystems, the environment, and human health. Research is currently focused on developing efficient adsorption materials to combat Cd (II) pollution in water. One promising solution involves co-pyrolyzing solid residue from anaerobic digestion of food waste with oil-based drill cuttings pyrolysis residue to create a biochar with high organic matter content. This biochar has a lower heavy metal content and leaching toxicity compared to China's national standar...

Inhibition and disaggregation effect of flavonoid-derived carbonized polymer dots on protein amyloid aggregation
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Apr 25;238:113928. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113928. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this research, four water-insoluble flavonoid compounds were utilized and reacted with arginine to prepare four carbonized polymer dots with good water-solubility in a hydrothermal reactor. Structural characterization demonstrated that the prepared carbonized polymer dots were classic core-shell structure. Effect of the prepared carbonized polymer dots on protein amyloid aggregation was further investigated using hen egg white lysozyme and human lysozyme as model protein in aqueous solution. Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2024 Apr 18;238:113923. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2024.113923. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe rapid advancement of photodynamic therapy (PDT) antibacterial materials has led to promising alternatives to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. However, antibacterial drugs have poor light absorption and utilization rates, which limits their practical application. Constructing two-dimensional (2D) heterojunctions from materials with matching photophysical properties has emerged as a highly effective strategy for achieving high-efficiency photo-antibacterial performance. Here, we designed...

Methanotrophs mediated biogas valorization: Sustainable route to polyhydroxybutyrate production
This study explores the ability of methanotrophs to convert biogas into biopolymers, addressing H2S as a limitation in the utilization of biogas as a carbon source for bioconversion. Transcriptomic analysis was conducted to understand the growth and changes in the expression patterns of Type I and II methanotrophs under varying H2S concentrations. Results suggested that Type II methanotrophs can possess a native H2S utilization pathway. Both Type I and II methanotrophs were evaluated for their growth and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production from biogas. Methylocystis sp. MJC1 and Methylocystis sp. OK1 exhibited a maximum b...
