Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 Jan 13:S0141-8130(22)00038-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.01.031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study establishes an experimental design for the preparation of new bi and tri-layer mucoadhesive sublingual films based on basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seed mucilage (OBM) as novel plant-polysaccharide for oromucosal administration of nystatin (Nys). The films formulation consists of a drug reservoir-mucoadhesive layer cross-linked via CaCl2, with protective mucoadhesive layers based on thiolated alginate (TA) and polydopamine (PDA). OBM served as a new mucoadhesive polysaccharide in second...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 5: Fresh Basil Infusion: Effect of Sous-Vide Heat Treatment on Their Volatile Composition Profile, Sensory Profile, and Color
iené Herbs, including basil, are used to enhance the flavor of food products around the world. Its potential is influenced by the quality of fresh herbs and processing practices, wherein conditions of heat treatment play an important role. The aim of the research was to determine the effect of sous-vide heat treatment on the volatile compounds profile, sensory quality, and color of basil infusions. The material used for research was aqueous basil infusion prepared conventionally at 100 °C, and using the sous-vide method (65, 75, and 85 °C). The composition of volatile compounds was identified b...

Differential Survivability of Two Genetically Similar Salmonella Thompson Strains on Pre-harvest Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum) Leaves
This study reports the differential survivability of two genetically similar Salmonella Thompson strains (ST 889B and ST 688C) on the adaxial surface of pre-harvest basil (Ocimum basilicum) leaves. Upon inoculation, two distinct phenomena, a dried water-print or a macroscopic lesion, were observed within 24 h. ST 889B survived better than ST 688C on healthy-looking leaves without lesions, possibly due to its higher biofilm-forming ability. Both strains survived better on the leaves with lesions than on the healthy-looking leaves (ST 688C: 4.39 ± 0.68 vs. 2.18 ± 0.29; ST 889B: 4.78 ± 0.12 vs. 2.83 ± 0....

Micelle to cyclodextrin stacking in open-tubular liquid chromatography using capillaries coated with surfactant admicelles
Anal Bioanal Chem. 2021 Nov 13. doi: 10.1007/s00216-021-03773-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn-line sample concentration by micelle to cyclodextrin stacking (MCDS) in open-tubular liquid chromatography (OT-LC) with UV detection is described. OT-LC of two sets of analytes (small-molecule drugs and neutral alkenylbenzenes) was by the use of a fused-silica capillary that was coated with admicelles of didodecyldimethyl ammonium bromide (DDAB). These admicelles acted as a stationary chromatographic pseudophase. The mobile phase was 25 mM sodium tetraborate in 10% methanol, pH 9.2. MCDS was by long pressure injection of sampl...

Influence of dietary basil (Ocimum basilicum) supplementation on growth performance, oxidative status biomarkers, and plasma biochemistry in common carp
AbstractBecause the cumulative effect of chemical components has a deterrent effect on consumer health, the use of natural food additives instead of traditional chemical food additives is becoming more and more useful for fish feed. The present research was conducted in common carp with the mean initial weight of 63.16  ± 0.72 g to assess the effect of dietary basil (Ocimum basilicum) powder (DBP) on some oxidative biomarkers in tissues and plasma biochemical parameters. Four formulations of experimental diets were prepared; group 1: control diet (in the absence of DBP), groups 2 (2% DBP), groups 3 (4% DBP), and grou...

Leveraging high-throughput hyperspectral imaging technology to detect cadmium stress in two leafy green crops and accelerate soil remediation efforts
Environ Pollut. 2021 Oct 25;292(Pt B):118405. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2021.118405. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal that can accumulate in soils and negatively impact crop as well as human health. Amendments like biochar have potential to address these challenges by reducing Cd bioavailability in soil, though reliance on post-harvest wet chemical methods to quantify Cd uptake have slowed efforts to identify the most effective amendments. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a novel technology that could overcome this limitation by quantifying symptoms of Cd stress while plants are still growing. The goal...

Molecules, Vol. 26, Pages 6483: Toxicological Stability of Ocimum basilicum Essential Oil and Its Major Components in the Control of Sitophilus zeamais
The objective of this work was to evaluate the toxicological stability of basil essential oil (O. basilicum) and its linalool and estragole components for Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) adults in corn grains by fumigation. The identification of the chemical compounds of the essential oil was performed with a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass selective detector. Mortality of insects was assessed after 24 h exposure. After storage for six (EO) and two months (linalool and estragole) under different conditions of temperature (5, 20, and 35 °C) and light (with and without exposure to light), its toxicological stability wa...

Hepatorenal protective efficacy of flavonoids from Ocimum basilicum extract in diabetic albino rats: A focus on hypoglycemic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities
Biomed Pharmacother. 2021 Oct 11;144:112287. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2021.112287. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlant derived phytochemical therapy is a bright candidate for treatment of diabetes and its associated complications. Ocimum baslicum is used as an anti-diabetic traditional medicine. Hence, the present study investigated the effect of Hail Ocimum extract (HOE) and its total flavonoids (HOETF) against hepatorenal damage in experimental diabetes induced by high-fat diet (HFD) and injection of streptozotocin (STZ) in rats. Diabetic animals were co-treated daily with HOE, HOETF or metformin (MET) as a standard anti-di...

Effect of plant systemic resistance elicited by biological and chemical inducers on the colonization of the lettuce and basil leaf apoplast by < em > Salmonella enterica < /em >
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2021 Oct 6:AEM0115121. doi: 10.1128/AEM.01151-21. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMitigation strategies to prevent microbial contamination of crops are lacking. We tested the hypothesis that induction of plant systemic resistance by biological (ISR) and chemical (SAR) elicitors reduces endophytic colonization of leaves by Salmonella enterica serovars Senftenberg and Typhimurium. S. Senftenberg had greater endophytic fitness than S. Typhimurium in basil and lettuce. The apoplastic population sizes of serovars Senftenberg and Typhimurium in basil and lettuce, respectively, were significantly reduced app...
