Analysis of the main bioactive compounds from Ocimum basilicum for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activity
This study is aimed to assess the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of basil leaf extract prepared using ethanol, methanol, and water. The ethanol and methanol extract have all the phytochemicals (alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, saponins, quinones, carbohydrates, and proteins) except steroids and terpenoids. In addition to steroids and terpenoids, tannin was also absent in the aqueous extract. Total phenolic and flavonoid content was high in ethanol and followed by methanol and aqueous extract. Similarly, ethanol and methanol extract showed strong antimicrobial activity against VRE and MTCC strains...

Effects of Ocimum basilicum essential oil and ginger extract on serum biochemistry, oxidative stress and gill tissue damage of pearl gentian grouper during simulated live transport
This study explored the effects of the essential oil ofOcimum basilicum (EOOB) and ginger extract (GE) during the transportation of pearl gentian grouper from water quality, serum biochemistry, oxidative stress, meat flavor, and gill tissue morphology. Fish (450  ± 50 g) were allocated to the following 5 treatments: control group (fish transported in water only), 5 mg/LEOOB, 10 mg/LEOOB, 3 mg/LGE, and 6 mg/LGE and transported in insulation boxes (66 × 51 × 37.8 cm) for 72 h. Samples were taken at 0, 12, 36, 60, and 72 h immediately af ter transport. It was found that 10 mg/LEOOB and 6 mg/LGE could ...

Encapsulation of purple basil leaf extract by electrospraying in double emulsion (W/O/W) filled alginate-carrageenan beads to improve the bioaccessibility of anthocyanins
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 9:126207. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126207. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purple basil leaf extract (PBLE) was encapsulated in double emulsion (W1/O/W2)-loaded beads (emulgel) by electrospraying. The influence of κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) and cross-linking agents (Ca2+/K+) on the properties of alginate (SA) beads were assessed. In emulgel beads, κ-CG inclusion resulted in larger sizes and more distorted shapes, wrinkles on the surface, and lower gel strength. The encapsulation efficiency of anthocyanins (ACNs) in emulgel beads ranged from 70.73 to 87.89 %, whereas it ranged from 13.50 to ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5286: Optimization of the Extraction Conditions of Bioactive Compounds from Ocimum basilicum Leaves Using Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction via a Sonotrode
Verardo Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) leaves are rich in bioactive compounds that present therapeutic benefits for human health. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) is frequently used to obtain phenolic compounds from plants/herbal sources. However, few works have developed multi-variable studies to find the optimal conditions to extract the maximum amount of compounds, especially when applied to UAE via a sonotrode. The purpose of this work was to perform a multi-variable study by employing a Box–Behnken design to collect the highest active compound content from Ocimum basilicum leaves. The efficac...

In silico Study of Antiviral Activity of Polyphenol Compounds from < em > Ocimum basilicum < /em > by Molecular Docking, ADMET, and Drug-Likeness Analysis
CONCLUSION: Based on the data obtained, Apigenin-7-glucuronide and dihydrokaempferol-3-glucoside are compounds that have more potential to have an antiviral effect on the main protease enzyme than aesculetin. Based on pharmacokinetic parameters and drug-likeness, three compounds can be used as lead compounds for further research.PMID:37131997 | PMC:PMC10149097 | DOI:10.2147/AABC.S403175 (Source: Adv Data)

Biomed Res Int. 2023 Apr 19;2023:9337763. doi: 10.1155/2023/9337763. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTMorus nigra (M) and Ocimum basilicum (O) mixture (MO2) extract was extracted using hexane (MO2H), chloroform (MO2C), ethyl acetate (MO2E), and methanol (MO2M) in a Soxhlet apparatus. The cytotoxicity was evaluated using MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. The IC50 values of the MO2C-treated cancer cells were 11.31 μg/mL (MDA-MB-231), 15.45 μg/mL (MCF-7), 18.9 μg/mL (HepG2), 26.33 μg/mL (Huh-7), 30.17 μg/mL (LoVo), and 36.76 μg/mL (HCT116). MO2C-treated cells showed cellular and nuclear ...
