Successful diagnosis by capsule endoscopy of small intestinal ascariasis that had been misdiagnosed repeatedly
A 52-year-old woman presented with recurrent abdominal distension and pain that had persisted for 2 years and had worsened over the previous week. The pain was mostly in the middle part of the upper abdomen and was experienced as paroxysmal episodes. The patient had sought medical attention at multiple hospitals and had undergone various examinations, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy. She had received a diagnosis of chronic gastritis and GI dysfunction, receiving corresponding treatments; however, her recurrent symptoms persisted. (Source: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)

A systematic review of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Myanmar
ConclusionThis review summarises NTDs reported in Myanmar over the past 100 years. The findings suggest that most NTDs are likely to be under reported, especially from the majority of the country which is far from academic centres. Research capacity building together with strengthening of laboratory systems would lead to better understanding of the true burden of NTDs in Myanmar. An unusual finding: Biliary ascariasis in a pregnant patient managed conservatively-a case report
CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the importance of considering biliary ascariasis in pregnant patients with biliary symptoms. Timely diagnosis, utilizing imaging modalities, and initiating conservative management with anti-helminthic therapy can lead to successful treatment outcomes. Increased awareness and understanding of this condition can aid clinicians in providing optimal care to similar patients.PMID:37811107 | PMC:PMC10553149 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001205 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Ascaridia galli infection in chicken: Pathobiology and immunological orchestra
Ascaridia galli is the most common helminth in chickens. It is more common in young chickens. The helminth induces huge economic losses in poultry. AbstractBackgroundAscaridia galli is the largest gut-dwelling helminth of chickens, which confers adverse effects on meat and egg production; thus, on the animal protein supply and the economy. Both adult and immature parasites affect gut health, but larval stages play a major role in pathology.AimsHere, we present immunology and pathology ofA. galli in chickens.Materials and MethodsLiteratures were surveyed through online platforms such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Researchga...

Noninvasive diagnosis of Ascaris lumbricoides in the common bile duct: A pediatric case report of acute pancreatitis
Key Clinical MessageThis case report highlights the importance of considering parasitic infections, particularly Ascaris lumbricoides, as a possible cause of acute pancreatitis in children, especially in endemic regions. Noninvasive imaging techniques, such as ultrasonography, can play a crucial role in the early detection and diagnosis of this unusual presentation. Timely administration of anthelmintic therapy led to the resolution of symptoms and prevented the need for invasive procedures. Healthcare providers should be vigilant about the diverse clinical manifestations of ascariasis, and regular deworming programs and h...

Therapeutic potential of toosendanin: Novel applications of an old ascaris repellent as a drug candidate
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 20;167:115541. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115541. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTToosendanin (TSN), extracted from Melia. toosendan Sieb.et Zucc. and Melia. azedarach L., has been developed into an ascaris repellent in China. However, with the improvement of public health protection, the incidence of ascariasis has been reduced considerably, resulting in limited medical application of TSN. Therefore, it is questionable whether this old ascaris repellent can develop into a drug candidate. Modern studies have shown that TSN has strong pharmacological activities, including anti-tumor, anti-botulin...
