Lactation traits and reproductive performances of Sahraoui female camel in two breeding systems at Algerian Sahara
AbstractThe main objective of this study is to determine the impact of the camel livestock system on individual and herd performances of milk production, lactation curve, fats, and protein concentrations. For this purpose, 13 she-camels of Sahraoui breed from the south eastern Algeria and belonging and semi-intensive system (N = 6) and intensive system (N = 7) were studied. Recording and sampling of milk were carried out at regular intervals during a full lactation. The lactation curve was estimated using Wood’s gamma function and thet-test of independent groups was carried out to compare lactation performances, ...

Access to kidney transplantation for patients with end-stage renal failure in Maghreb countries: state of art and recommendations
In conclusion, access to transplantation remains low in the Maghreb countries. All the modalities (living donor with enlargement of the circle of donors, deceased donors) must be further developed. Recommendations were issued to support activity.PMID:38314548 | DOI:10.1684/ndt.2024.62 (Source: Nephrologie and Therapeutique)

GC-MS analysis of essential oil from the leaves of Algerian < em > Bupleurum plantagineum < /em > Desf
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 5:1-5. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2310671. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBupleurum plantagineum Desf. (Apiaceae) is a plant endemic to North Africa, including Algeria. It is used as natural medicine, due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. In this work, we studied the chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) obtained by hydro-distillation from B. plantagineum leaves collected from the national park of Gouraya (Bejaïa), Algeria. Thirty components were identified in the EO by Gas chromatography-Mass Spectrometry(GC-MS) (relative abundance: 96.7%). Monoterpene h...

Two New Families and a Literature Review of ELOVL4-Associated Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 34
AbstractAutosomal dominant variants inELOVL4 cause spinocerebellar ataxia type 34 (SCA34; ATX-ELOVL4), classically associated with a skin condition known as erythrokeratoderma. Here, we report a large Italian-Maltese-Australian family with spinocerebellar ataxia. Notably, while there were dermatological manifestations (eczema), erythrokeratoderma was not present. Using a next-generation sequencing panel, we identified a previously reportedELOVL4 variant, NM_022726.4: c.698C  >  T p.(Thr233Met). The variant was initially classified as a variant of uncertain significance; however, through segregation studies, we recla...

HLA-B*58 and HLA-B*27 Play a Role in the Development of Acute Leukemia: A Case Control Study
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the HLA-B*27 and HLA-B*58, may be factors predisposing individuals to acute leukemia, in west and southwest Algerian patients. A large-scale study is still needed to confirm these findings.PMID:38285781 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2024.25.1.169 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)

Recurrent “outsider” intronic variation in the SLC5A6 gene causes severe mixed axonal and demyelinating neuropathy, cyclic vomiting and optic atrophy in 3 families from Maghreb
Sodium dependent multivitamin transporter (SMVT) deficiency is a very rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by multisystemic clinical manifestations due to combined biotin, panthotenic acid and lipoic acid deficiency. About 10 families have been described so far. Accurate diagnosis is crucial because of the possibility of a supplementation treatment with proven efficacy. Here we describe 4 new patients (3 additional families) originating from the same world region (Algeria, Maghreb). All patients, born form consanguineous parents, were homozygous carriers of the same intronic variation, outside of canonical sites...

Detection of hepatitis E virus genotype 3 in an Algerian mouse (Mus spretus) in Portugal
AbstractVirus monitoring in small mammals is central to the design of epidemiological control strategies for rodent-borne zoonotic viruses. Synanthropic small mammals are versatile and may be potential carriers of several microbial agents. In the present work, a total of 330 fecal samples of small mammals were collected at two sites in the North of Portugal and screened for zoonotic hepatitis E virus (HEV, speciesPaslahepevirus balayani). Synanthropic small mammal samples (n = 40) were collected in a city park of Porto and belonged to the species Algerian mouse (Mus spretus) (n = 26) and to the greater white-toothe...

The discovery of Moniliformis saudi (Acanthocephala: Moniliformidae) in the Algerian hedgehog Atelerix algirus in Malta: morphological, molecular, and metal analyses
Syst Parasitol. 2024 Jan 9;101(2):12. doi: 10.1007/s11230-023-10128-x.ABSTRACTThe acanthocephalan Moniliformis saudi Amin, Heckmann, Mohammed, Evans, 2016 was originally described from the desert hedgehog, Paraechinus aethiopicus (Ehrenberg) in central Saudi Arabia. The distribution of P. aethiopicus extends to North Africa and west to Mauritania. Moniliformis saudi was recently found in the Algerian hedgehog Atelerix algirus (Lereboullet) in Malta. The distribution of A. algirus is restricted to the North African and east Iberian Mediterranean coast and associated islands. Both host species cohabit and share the same feed...
