Isolation, Identification and Screening of Saharan Actinomycete Strain < em > Streptomyces fimbriatus < /em > AC31 Endowed with Antimicrobial Activity
This study aimed to investigate antimicrobial activities of Saharan actinomycetes, with specific focus on the strain Streptomyces fimbriatus AC31, that holds promising potential as an alternative to combat AMR. In this context, 32 actinomycetes were isolated from El Atteuf (Ghardaïa), Algeria. Isolates obtained were characterized morphologically and biochemically. Screened isolate was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Classification of actinomycete isolates was carried out by UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean). Then, they were screened for their antimicrobial activity by cross-streak method. I...

Bentonite SDBS-loaded composite for methylene blue removal from wastewater: An experimental and theoretical investigation
This study addresses the urgent need for practical solutions to industrial water contamination. Utilizing Algerian Bentonite as an adsorbent due to its regional prevalence, we focused on the efficiency of the Bentonite/Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) matrix in Methylene Blue (MB) removal. The zero-charge point and IR spectroscopy characterized the adsorbent. Acidic pH facilitated SDBS adsorption on Bentonite, achieving equilibrium in 30 min with a pseudo-second-order model. The UPAC and Freundlich model indicated a qmax of 25.97 mg/g. SDBS adsorption was exothermic at elevated temperatures. The loaded Bentonite exhi...

Environmental assessment of heavy metal contamination at Chekfa aggregate quarry (Jijel, North ‐East Algeria)
AbstractIt is fascinating to observe the potential hazards associated with mining and quarrying activities, despite the limited number of comprehensive studies conducted in Algeria to evaluate their environmental impact. This particular investigation focuses on El M'cif quarry in Chekfa, located within the Nil watershed in Jijel, a region situated in the North-East of Algeria. The primary objective is to assess the concentrations of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and cadmium (Cd) in surface water, groundwater, stream sediments, and soil. Consequently, a suite of petrographic and geochemical analyses is undertaken to di...

Impending sale of scientifically critical helium sparks worries
After serving as the world’s largest provider of helium for nearly a century, the U.S. government is close to bowing out of the market. Aiming to recoup costs, it began emptying its vast underground reservoir of the gas in the 1990s and has now put the whole federal helium system up for sale. Early next year, the government plans to unveil bids from potential buyers of the Amarillo, Texas, facility, which includes a distribution pipeline and the porous rock formation containing the remaining stores of helium—a substance used in everything from MRI machines to quantum computers to party balloons. But few are celeb...

Neutralizing based seroprevalence study of Toscana virus in livestock from Algeria
Comp Immunol Microbiol Infect Dis. 2023 Oct 5;103:102075. doi: 10.1016/j.cimid.2023.102075. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTToscana virus is a sandfly-borne human pathogen belonging to Phlebovirus genus into Phenuiviridae family. It is emerging in north Africa posing a complex threat to public health. TOSV is heavily affecting sandfly-exposed people in northern Algeria. A larger distribution has recently been stated in Algeria by using dog sera. Dog exposure to TOSV was repeatedly identified in north Algeria, with 4.56% lately detected to possess respective neutralizing antibodies. However, evidence for TOSV has only been ob...

Atypical hemolytic and uremic syndrome in Algeria: diagnostic difficulties and therapeutic constraints
Nephrol Ther. 2023 Nov 2;19(6):483-490. doi: 10.1684/ndt.2023.37.ABSTRACTAtypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS) is a systemic disease due to dysregulation of the alternate complement pathway, mortality is estimated at 10% and more than 50% of patients progress to end-stage renal disease. The aim of this study was to summarize the clinical data and biological results as well as the evolution and management of patients with aHUS seen over a period of four years in one specialized department in Algeria. Our study was observational and longitudinal. The inclusion criteria were: the clinical-biological triad of aHUS and age ...
