"This drug turned me into a robot": an actor-network analysis of a web-based ethnographic study of psychostimulant use.
CONCLUSION: These findings may contribute to shaping public health policies and interventions that acknowledge the values of the individuals they seek to help, and that attempt to reduce the potential harms associated with these pharmaceuticals as an alternative to more prohibitive approaches. Enhancing the Nature-of-Activities Account of Enhancement
AbstractMany find it intuitive that those who use enhancements like steroids and Adderall in Olympic weightlifting and education are due less praise than those who perform equally well without using these enhancements. Nonetheless, it is not easy to coherently explain why one might be justifiably due less praise for using these technologies to enhance one ’s performance. Justifications for this intuition which rely on concerns regarding authenticity, cheating, or shifts in who is responsible for the performance face serious problems. Santoni de Sio et al., however, have recently defended a justification for this intuitio...

Modafinil for the Improvement of Patient Outcomes Following Traumatic Brain Injury
Conclusion. Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant with well-established effectiveness in the treatment of narcolepsy and shift-work sleep disorder. There is conflicting evidence about the benefits of modafinil in the treatment of fatigue and EDS secondary to TBI. One randomized, controlled study states that modafinil does not significantly improve patient wakefulness, while another concludes that modafinil corrects EDS but not fatigue. An observational study provides evidence that modafinil increases alertness in fatigued patients with past medical history of brainstem diencephalic stroke or multiple sclerosis. ...

Placental Complications Associated With Psychostimulant Use in Pregnancy.
CONCLUSION: Psychostimulant use during pregnancy was associated with a small increased relative risk of preeclampsia and preterm birth. The absolute increases in risks are small and, thus, women with significant ADHD should not be counseled to suspend their ADHD treatment based on these findings. 22.5 Animal Models and Amphetamine Isomers in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Drug Development
Psychostimulants with different isomers of amphetamine, such as Adderall and d-amphetamine, are known to be safe and effective treatments for ADHD. Clinical studies have demonstrated that l-amphetamine is not an inactive isomer. Adderall contains approximately 25 percent l-amphetamine; Evekeo ® contains approximately 50 percent l-amphetamine. Clinical studies and animal models have suggested that there may be a role for different isomer combinations of amphetamine based on the patient’s diagnosis and genetic makeup. Posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy syndrome after kratom ingestion.
We report a young man who suddenly developed severe headache, disorientation, and aphasia following ingestion of kratom and Adderall. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of his head revealed foci of vasogenic edema in the posterior occipital lobes, frontal lobes, and brainstem. In addition, he had a small area of hemorrhage in the left posterior occipital lobe. Lumbar puncture revealed an increased number of red blood cells but no other abnormalities. His initial blood pressure was elevated but returned to normal during hospitalization. This case suggests that kratom can cause posterior reversible encephalop...

An Algorithm to Identify Generic Drugs in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System
ConclusionsThe algorithm demonstrated high inter-rater reliability with moderate internal consistency for identifying generic drugs in the FAERS, in our sample. Future efforts should focus on improving the reliability and validity of identifying generics through improving the completeness of reporting in the FAERS. (Source: Drug Safety)
