Effects of dietary fat type and emulsification on carotenoid absorption: a randomized crossover trial
CONCLUSIONS: The type and emulsification of dietary fat are both essential to the carotenoid absorption. Findings from this study may provide scientific support for designing excipient emulsions as potential dietary strategies to optimize the absorption of fat-soluble compounds.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY: The present trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04323826), link: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04323826.PMID:36921903 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2023.03.011 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Stability yield indices on different sweet corn hybrids based on AMMI analysis
Braz J Biol. 2023 Mar 13;84:e270680. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.270680. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCurrently, sweet corn is considered an important crop due to its high sugar content and low starch content. Important sugars in sweet corn include sucrose, fructose, glucose, and maltose. The purpose of the present study was to use the yield indices of the eight examined sweet corn hybrids and the correlation of the yield indices together. Concentration is important for consumers in terms of yield indices. The research site was located at the Látókép Experimental Station of the University of Debrecen. The small plot experiment h...

Zearalenone induces the senescence of cardiovascular cells in vitro and in vivo
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Mar 13. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-25869-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZearalenone is a contaminant in food and feed products. It has been reported that zearalenone could lead to serious damage to health. So far, it is unclear whether zearalenone could lead to cardiovascular aging-related injury. For this, we assessed the effect of zearalenone on cardiovascular aging. Cardiomyocyte cell lines and primary coronary endothelial cells were used as two cell models in vitro experiments, and Western-blot, indirect immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry were performed to study the effect of zearale...

Mechanism for the selective uptake of macular carotenoids mediated by the HDL cholesterol receptor SR-BI
Exp Eye Res. 2023 Feb 28:109429. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2023.109429. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe macular carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are taken up from the bloodstream into the human retina through a selective process, for which the HDL cholesterol receptor scavenger receptor BI (SR-BI) in the cells of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is thought to be a key mediator. However, the mechanism of SR-BI-mediated selective uptake of macular carotenoids is still not fully understood. Here, we investigate possible mechanisms using biological assays and cultured HEK293 cells, a cell line without endogenous SR-BI expression....

A nostoxanthin-producing bacterium, Sphingomonas nostoxanthinifaciens sp. nov., alleviates the salt stress of Arabidopsis seedlings by scavenging of reactive oxygen species
A novel, nostoxanthin-producing, endophytic bacterium, designated as AK-PDB1-5T, was isolated from the needle-like leaves of the Korean fir (Abies koreana Wilson) collected from Mt. Halla in Jeju, South Korea. A 16S rRNA sequence comparison indicated that the closest phylogenetic neighbors were Sphingomonas crusticola MIMD3T (95.6%) and Sphingomonas jatrophae S5-249T (95.3%) of the family Sphingomonadaceae. Strain AK-PDB1-5T had a genome size of 4,298,284 bp with a 67.8% G + C content, and digital DNA–DNA hybridization and OrthoANI values with the most closely related species of only 19.5–21% and 75.1–76.8%, re...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1187: Lutein Isomers: Preparation, Separation, Structure Elucidation, and Occurrence in 20 Medicinal Plants
In this study, lutein isomers were produced via iodine-catalyzed isomerization, and four cis-isomers (9Z-, 9′Z-, 13Z-, and 13Z′) were isolated by means of column chromatography and semipreparative HPLC. The structures of the 9′Z- and 13′Z-isomers were elucidated via NMR measurements. These compounds were used as standards for the HPLC-DAD-MS determination of the carotenoid composition of the flowers of 20 plant species, in which lutein and its geometrical isomers are the main components. The flowers showed great variation in their cis- and trans-lutein content, and al...

Zeaxanthin prevents ferroptosis by promoting mitochondrial function and inhibiting the p53 pathway in free fatty acid-induced HepG2 cells
In this study, free fatty acid (FFA) induced HepG2 cells were used as a cell model for NAFLD. Our results suggest that ZEA exerts antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects in FFA-induced HepG2 cells. Moreover, ZEA acted as a ferroptosis inhibitor, significantly reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and iron overload and improving mitochondrial dysfunction in FFA-induced HepG2 cells. In addition, ZEA downregulated the expression of p53 and modulated downstream targets, such as GPX4, SLC7A11, SAT1, and ALOX15, which contributed to the reduction in cellular lipid peroxidation. Our findings suggest that ZEA has t...
