Insecticidal activity of two essential oils used in perfumery (ylang ylang and frankincense).
Abstract Nowadays, only a little part of essential oils produced at an industrial level is employed for insecticidal formulations, while thousand tons are used for perfumery purposes. This research explores the insecticidal potential of two essential oils largely used in perfumery, ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) and frankincense (Boswellia spp.) on three insects of economic importance, Culex quinquefasciatus, Musca domestica and Spodoptera littoralis, comparing their performances with a commercial pyrethrum extract. GC-MS showed that the ylang ylang and frankincense essential oils were mainly composed of α...

Discrete and combined effects of Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil and gamma irradiation on growth and mycotoxins production by Fusarium graminearum in maize
Publication date: Available online 23 July 2018Source: Food ControlAuthor(s): Naveen Kumar Kalagatur, Venkataramana Mudili, Jalarama Reddy Kamasani, Chandranayaka SiddaiahAbstractIn the present study, discrete and combined inhibitory effects of Cananga odorata essential oil (COEO) and irradiation were established on growth and production of deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA) by Fusarium graminearum in maize kernels. Chemical profile of COEO was characterized by GC-MS and a total of 35 chemical constituents were identified, and major compounds were linalool (29.15%), germacrene-D (11.82%), and thymol (8.45%). The CO...

Cananga odorata essential oil reverses the anxiety induced by 1-(3-chlorophenyl) piperazine through regulating the MAPK pathway and serotonin system in mice
Conclusion YYO odor exposure could reverse the anxiety behaviors generated by m-CPP. The anxiolytic effect of YYO was associated with the ERK1/2/CREB pathway in the hippocampus and relevant to the serotonin system. Graphical abstract (Source: Journal of Ethnopharmacology)

P257 Smell triggered seizure in a patient with temporal lobe epilepsy
Among the reflex seizures, those triggered by smell are very rarely reported. We aimed to present a patient with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), who experienced a video-EEG recorded seizure while smelling ylang-ylang extract during a study protocol. (Source: Clinical Neurophysiology)

Anti-oxidant activity and major chemical component analyses of twenty-six commercially available essential oils
This study analyzed 26 commercially available essential oils and their major chemical components to determine their antioxidant activity levels by measuring their total phenolic content (TPC), reducing power (RP), β-carotene bleaching (BCB) activity, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging (DFRS) ability. The clove bud and thyme borneol essential oils had the highest RP, BCB activity levels, and TPC values among the 26 commercial essential oils. Furthermore, of the 26 essential oils, the clove bud and ylang ylang complete essential oils had the highest TEAC ...

Positive Patch-Test Reactions to Essential Oils in Consecutive Patients: Results From North America and Central Europe.
CONCLUSIONS: Testing to EOs may be important for detecting sensitivity not detected by FMs alone. In North America, M. alternifolia is an important and clinically relevant sensitizer often not detected by FM. In Europe, as well as in North America, clinical relevance is often difficult to evaluate because (1) labeling of EOs when used as fragrance is not mandatory, and (2) these mixtures may indicate sensitization to 1 or more of their individual constituents from other sources, including synthetic fragrances. Inhibitory Effects of Thai Essential Oils on Potentially Aflatoxigenic Aspergillus parasiticus and Aspergillus flavus.
Authors: Jantapan K, Poapolathep A, Imsilp K, Poapolathep S, Tanhan P, Kumagai S, Jermnak U Abstract The antiaflatoxigenic and antifungal activities of essential oils (EOs) of finger root (Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf.), pine (Pinus pinaster), rosewood (Aniba rosaedora), Siam benzoin (Styrax tonkinensis), Thai moringa (Moringa oleifera), and ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) were tested for Aspergillus parasiticus and Aspergillus flavus in potato dextrose broth. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was extracted from culture using a QuEChERS-based extraction procedure and analyzed with high performance liquid chromatogra...

Lignan Diesters of Canangafruticoside A from the Leaves of Cananga odorata var. odorata.
Abstract From the leaves of Cananga odorata var. odorata, three relatively large molecules, namely two aryl naphthalene lignan diesters of canangafruticoside A and one cyclobutane lignan diester of canangafruticoside A, were isolated along with four known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic evidence. PMID: 28049920 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin)

Evaluation and Monitoring of a Child With Hydrocarbon Pneumonitis Using Point-of-Care Lung Ultrasound in the Pediatric Emergency Department
Abstract: A well-appearing 3-year-old boy presented to the pediatric emergency department 2 hours after a presumed hydrocarbon ingestion. He was referred to the emergency department by his pediatrician after consultation with the local poison control center after possibly ingesting ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) fragrance oil. The child was asymptomatic with a normal physical examination. Point-of-care lung ultrasound identified focal hydrocarbon pneumonitis in the right lung and demonstrated resolution of these findings. Utilization of point-of-care ultrasound resulted in a shorter emergency department length of stay and t...
