Uro vs Obgyn?
Hi, I'm starting my clinical years in medical school soon and applying for match in a little over a year. I've recently been second-guessing my choice of ob/gyn as a future specialty for a couple of reasons. The reputation of malignant residency, call hours, and realizing that if I wanted to stay in an urban area I likely wouldnt be able to do a great mix of clinic and surgery due to subspecialization. I was interested in urology as well, however didn't really consider it too heavily until... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Starting MS3 on uro
Starting MS3 with a surgical subspecialty elective I am interested in matching in - urology. Had hoped I would have some time to get up to speed with clerkships before this elective, but such is life. Any specific tips for doing well on a urology elective? I have already started on the anking step2 deck for surgery and knocked out all the urology tagged cards (there weren't that many). (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medication monitoring
We have been having some discussions about what type of labs are needed and how often for medications. I am curious what if any labs do you do and how often for certain medications. Obviously if the patient has underlying medical issues this will change. Amitriptyline: We do not check anything Duloxetine/Venlafaxine: Do not check anything Gabapentin/Lyrica: Right now we are being asked to check yearly kidney function, I don't really see the need to do this unless underlying kidney issues... Anyone here able to offer opinions on the Cornell Nephrology fellowship. It's obviously not held in the same regard as Columbia but what is the general reputation for the program and how it treats residents? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is kidney volume associated with kidney function?
Hallo, I am wondering if there is an association between kidney function/eGFR and kidney volume. (other than in the case of polycystic kidney disease). I could imagine that decreased kidney volume could be associated with decreased kidney function because of the loss of nephrons. But so far I could not find a scientific article about this. Does anybody know more about this subject? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Only Surgeons should be cancelling (or transferring) cases
I don't know if the discussion got moved to the private forum, or deleted. But there was a thread about a huge pediatric liver resection that had absolutely no business being done anywhere but a tertiary medical center. I can find no fault in how the anesthesiologists handled the case. As a department, it sounded like they did their best to convince the surgeon to refer the case to Stanford. For anybody coming to the forum looking for evidence that the anesthesiologists were to blame... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

But I just recently developed an interest in dermatology too. I have been trying to decide what would be best for my upcoming summer so would love some advice!
