What are my chances
Hello everyone, I am very interested in applying to Urology, but I like to get some input into my chances before I fully commit and finalize my 4th-year electives. Currently, my schedule is heavily focused on Urology Medical school: low-mid tier, however, home urology is program is pretty good STEP1: 238 Pre-clinical grades: second quartile Clinicals: Psychiatry: high pass OB/GYN: high pass Surgery: average Family medicine: high pass Medicine: pending... Contrast Agents in Renal Insufficiency
I know IV CT contrast (iodinated agents) are bad for the kidneys but other things seem to be a gray line. Can someone weigh in on the following. Assume the patient is CKD3B plus. I know w/ ESRD with dialysis you can just dialyze it out if the imaging isn't urgent. 1.) Oral CT contrast? 2.) Gadolinium (MRI) contrast? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

fellowship options and market
Nearing the end of 3rd year, I'm starting to get the nudge from my attendings to consider fellowship. I did research on my own but with urology being such a small field there isn't much to go on. My own interests are broad- I basically enjoyed all of my rotations thus far and enjoy doing all procedures (except maybe UDS) but don't specifically have any specific affinity for anything. The fellowship options i've boiled down are: Endourology/Robotics 1 year (definitely not considering 2 years... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How Competitive is Infectious Disease?
I'm curious how competitive this field is. Some of my colleagues in IM say Nephrology and ID are really easy to match even coming from a community program. How real is it that ID is easy to match? I've seen the data, but I don't know if there are other variables like self-selection and such (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nebraska vs. TCU/UNTHSC vs. Wayne State
Hey everyone, I’m grateful enough to have been accepted into 2 different medical schools, and am still on the waitlist at one more. I’m trying to get some of y’all’s insight into what would be the best option as I think these three med schools are likely all similar in rank/prestige. I don’t think I’ll be shooting for any seriously competitive specialties, but some that I’m interested in are neurology, EM, IM, urology, endocrinology, gen surg, etc. I know it's still a while until I'll need... Urology residency lonely?
For all the urology PGY1/2s, do you ever feel lonely? This is especially for smaller programs i.e. 2 residents per class, and especially taking consults and doing overnight call, do you just feel lonely doing that stuff largely by yourself? I'm trying to gauge if this is unique to urology and other specialized surgical fields, because I imagine as a general surgery resident (or even non surgical fields) you have a much larger cohort of residents who can share in the experience. I feel like... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I take this scholarship?
Hello. I am going to graduate from college this May, Spring 2021. After that, I will have to take a few pre-requisites before I sit for the MCAT in Spring 2022. This is because I only got interested in medicine after almost dying from a liver illness halfway through college. Went on medical leave, starting self-studying sciences, and now here we are. My question is this: I am competing for a travel grant. The grant is awarded to 40 students in the US each year. It allows you to complete a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nephrology Boards Help
I'm really struggling here but I completed a Nephrology fellowship and studied a decent amount for boards only to find out today that I failed (barely). Its super duper upsetting, embarrassing, etc etc. Its just so difficult to deal with at this stage of training. Honestly, the implications don't mean much other than re-taking it next year but still I truly don't know what went wrong (other than I suck at tests and they truly never equate to my ability and knowledge, but alas). My question... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should I wait
Hey so I'm a junior and want to apply this cycle. I'm a URM and have a 3.85 at top state public school with hopeful 515+ on mcat. However, I have over 1000 hours or different research (genetics, nephrology, cancer) but only 100 hours of shadowing in 1 specialty last semester and practically no other clinical experience unless folding sheets at a VA clinic means anything and hope to get some this more semester (potential vaccine administration). I wasn't really able to get clinical experience... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is "Choosing Wisely" (ordering less tests) legit or purely a money saving attempt?
From an individual patient care and liability standpoint - it makes more sense to order more tests (in general principle). But we have this notion being put forward to avoid asymptomatic screening tests out of fear that something may be positive. That's true to a degree but only if the positive result is of no consequence. For example, an asymptomatic CBC or CMP may reveal anemia that could be colon cancer or transaminitis that could be liver disease. A positive result will send you down the... Cardiology after a nephrology fellowship?
Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some of your opinions on an idea I had. I am ultimately interested in Advanced Heart Failure Cardiology. My problem is that I am a US IMG from a mid-higher tier community hospital program in NYC, so my chances for the traditional cards then hf fellowship are slim. I was planning to do a nephrology fellowship at a large research institution to get some publications as nephro and cardiology have unique common grounds in heart failure patients. After... US DO - Reality Check on Pursuing Urology
I'm a non-trad 3rd year DO that developed an interest in Urology. I want a reality check before I dump 10 months of hard work into matching Urology with a theoretical 60% chance of success. Stats: Step1 - 252 COMLEX - above average Grades - preclinical was average, so far all honors for rotations, including surg. Leadership - Yes, multiple roles ECs - significant work history that was all EM related, but I have a good story to explain my desire for Urology Research - Presentation...
