Subspecialty+Palliative Care in academic setting
Hi everyone, Just wondering if there's anyone who's board certified/eligible in both HPM and a subspecialty of some sort (or primary care/hospitalist) who's able to practice both in an academic setting? (i.e. someone who's boarded in Medical Oncology/Hematology/Nephrology/PCCM etc. and HPM who does a mix of both, or someone who does a week of hospitalist + 1 week of HPM, rinse and repeat.) Basic question: can a person practice both another specialty/their original primary specialty and HPM... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Fun Cases!
I go over to the human med side of SDN and recently found a good thread about fun/cool cases in the ER subforum. I think it would be fun to share cases we liked, found interesting, etc. This week I had an adult Husky come in for xylitol toxicity of 2.0-2.4g/kg (4x the hepatotoxicity level). Hospitalized thinking he'd die despite my best efforts. Nope! Kiddos BG maintained normal levels the whole time. Liver values never changed. And the psychopath howled and hollered the whole time on ace... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

ACGME Survey and implications
Hey all, Long time lurker, first time poster here. This may sound like a wierd question, but I'm in the (rather negative) headspace where I have to ask it. I'm a resident at a small-ish training program in my final year. I am in the unfortunate situation that I have a very negative relationship with a lot of the program leadership. It's at a known malignant and prestitigious insitution, where it seems there is an unspoken understanding that because the place is really desirable, trainees... Informing patients of bad news
Hey everyone I’m a relatively new attending, I was wondering how everyone approached delivering patients bad news. I have EPIC so sometimes patients will see the results of their own liver biopsy and my practice pattern is to typically say we will discuss scans & results at the next visit, especially if it doesn’t change management. But I sometimes run into the case where a scan will show disease progression and I’m not sure if they would benefit from a phone call prior to the visit to... Primary Care Job - Saturated Cities!?
Are there any cities currently saturated for primary care jobs for those boarded in internal medicine or family medicine? What about for the IM sub-specialties gastroenterology, cardiology, hematology/oncology, critical care/pulmonary, nephrology, or allergy/immunology? Can you pretty much pick your city for primary care or are jobs harder to come by in certain cities like LA or NYC? Also, what is the expected salary for LA or NYC in primary care? What is the expected salary in the IM... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
