Biofilm eradication of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia by Levofloxacin and Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
In conclusion, S. maltophilia isolated from blood had higher biofilm production than those from respiratory samples. Resistance to antibiotics increased due to biofilm production. Antibiotic monotherapy might not be the best course of action for the treatment of S. maltophilia infections in Mexico, as they might also be causing biofilm production.PMID:38296539 | DOI:10.7883/yoken.JJID.2023.389 (Source: Japanese Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Antimicrobial resistance patterns of common Gram-negative microorganisms isolated from patients with lower respiratory tract infection in a Teaching Hospital in Vietnam
Jpn J Infect Dis. 2024 Jan 31. doi: 10.7883/yoken.JJID.2023.260. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis cross-sectional study investigated the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns of Gram-negative pathogens isolated from 4,789 hospitalized patients with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs). Of the collected specimens, 1,325 (27.7%) specimens tested positive for Gram-negative bacteria. The most prevalent isolates were Acinetobacter baumannii (38.6%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (33.5%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.7%), Escherichia coli (5.6%), and Klebsiella aerogenes (3.5%). Antimicrobial resistance analysis revealed high re...

A regimen based on the combination of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole with caspofungin and corticosteroids as a first-line therapy for patients with severe non-HIV-related pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia: a retrospective study in a tertiary hospital
Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening and severe disease in immunocompromised hosts. A synergistic regimen based on the combination of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SMX-TMP) with caspof... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

Genomic surveillance of extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from poultry in the UK from 2016 to 2020
In this study, we performed whole genome sequencing for genomic characterization of 761 extended-spectrum cephalosporinases (ESCs) harboring Escherichia coli isolated from poultry caeca and meat through EU harmonized monitoring of AMR in zoonotic and commensal bacteria from 2016 and 2018 and UK national monitoring in 2020.ResultsThe most common ESC in 2016 and 2018 was blaCTX-M-1; however, 2020 had a greater diversity of ESCs with blaCTX-M-55 dominant in chickens and blaCTX-M-15 more prevalent in turkeys. Co-resistance to sulphonamides, tetracycline, and trimethoprim was widespread, and there were several positive correlat...

Interactions of plumbagin with five common antibiotics against < i > Staphylococcus aureus in vitro < /i >
by Songtao Bie, Qiuyue Mo, Chen Shi, Hui Yuan, Chunshuang Li, Tong Wu, Wenlong Li, Heshui YuStaphylococcus aureus is the main culprit, causing a variety of severe clinical infections. At the same time, clinics are also facing the severe situation of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, effective strategies to address this problem may include expanding the antimicrobial spectrum by exploring alternative sources of drugs or delaying the development of antibiotic resistance through combination therapy so that existing antibiotics can continue to be used. Plumbagin (PLU) is a phytochemical that exhibits antibacterial activity. In...

Successful rescue of disseminated < em > Nocardia < /em > infection with multiple abscesses in a patient with membranous nephropathy after cardiopulmonary resuscitation: A three-year follow-up
We present a case study of one patient with nephrotic syndrome and membranous nephropathy, who underwent treatment with prednisone and cyclosporine in 2016. In early 2017, the patient was diagnosed with a "fungal infection" and discontinued the use of cyclosporine. After one month of anti-infection therapy, a cranial magnetic resonance imaging scan showed multiple abscesses in the right temporal region. The diagnosis of nocardiosis was confirmed based on the presence of metastatic abscess masses, multiple lung and brain lesions, and a positive culture of Nocardia in the drainage. We changed the anti-infection therapy to a ...

First detection of a cefiderocol-resistant and extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolate in Bulgaria
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2024 Jan 23. doi: 10.1556/030.2024.02201. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCefiderocol (CFDC) is a first-in-class siderophore cephalosporin with potent activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria including carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. The present study aimed to explore the CFDC resistance mechanisms of an extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii isolate from Bulgaria. The A. baumannii Aba52 strain (designated Aba52) was obtained in 2018 from a blood sample of a critically ill patient. The methodology included antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequen...

Invasive Streptococcus suis isolated in Spain contain a highly promiscuous and dynamic resistome
ConclusionsOur work evidences that S. suis is a major contributor to AMR dissemination across veterinary and human pathogens. Therefore, control of AMR in S. suis should be considered from a One Health approach in regions with high pig production to properly tackle the issue of antimicrobial drug resistance. Pneumocystosis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis on adalimumab therapy: a case-based review
AbstractPneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a potentially fatal type of pneumonitis, which may have devastating consequences. Typically, it occurs in immunocompromised patients, with the natural history varying depending on the presence or not of HIV infection. Staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing in induced sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is the cornerstone of the diagnosis, while trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is the treatment of choice. The etiological association of biologic agents with the occurrence of PJP is not entirely clear. Adalimumab is a fully human monoclonal anti-TNF-alpha antibod...
