Acute Uncomplicated UTIs in Adults: Rapid Evidence Review
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Feb;109(2):167-174.ABSTRACTAn acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection of the lower urinary tract with no sign of systemic illness or pyelonephritis in a noncatheterized, nonpregnant adult with no urologic abnormalities or immunocompromise. In women, a self-diagnosis of a UTI with the presence of typical symptoms (e.g., frequency, urgency, dysuria/burning sensation, nocturia, suprapubic pain), without vaginal discharge, is accurate enough to diagnose an uncomplicated UTI without further testing. Urine culture and susceptibility testing should be reserved for women wi...

Pathogenic Potential of < em > Turicella otitidis < /em > and < em > Staphylococcus auricularis < /em > : A Case Report
Conclusions: Our findings suggest the potential pathogenicity of T. otitidis and S. auricularis, especially among patients with prior ear surgery and tympanic membrane perforation. Violation of the epithelial barrier from surgery or trauma may contribute to their pathogenicity. Future study is warranted to elucidate pathogenicity of normal aural flora and its mechanisms.PMID:38389189 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241230245 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

Disseminated nocardiosis and anti-GM-CSF antibodies
We report an apparently immunocompetent woman presenting with disseminated nocardiosis without any evidence of PAP. Clinical data and radiological images were retrospectively collected. Lymphocyte populations were analyzed by flow cytometry. Anti-GM-CSF autoantibodies were measured by ELISA. A 55-year-old otherwise healthy woman presented with cerebral and pulmonary abscesses. Personal and familial history of infections or autoimmunity were negative. After extensive examinations, a final diagnosis of disseminated nocardiosis was made. Immunologic investigations including neutrophilic function and IFN- γ/IL-12 circuitry fa...

Effect of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia prophylaxis on hematologic toxicity in patients receiving chemoradiation for primary brain tumors
ConclusionThese findings suggest that the type of PJP prophylaxis does not significantly affect the risk for hematologic toxicity in brain tumor patients receiving radiation and temozolomide. Additional studies are merited to evaluate the higher rate of neutropenia in patients on TMP/SMX observed in this study. (Source: Journal of Neuro-Oncology)

Significant differences in the caecal bacterial microbiota of red and grey squirrels in Britain
Conclusion. Clear differences between the caecal microbiota of the two species of squirrel were identified, which could potentially impact their overall health and ability to compete for resources.PMID:38354038 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001793 (Source: Journal of Medical Microbiology)

Evaluation of in  vitro activity of ceftaroline, ceftobiprole and their combination with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole against MRSA isolates: a two center study
J Chemother. 2024 Feb 13:1-8. doi: 10.1080/1120009X.2024.2316539. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is an increasing need for new synergistic antimicrobial combinations against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Our objective was to evaluate the activity of ceftaroline, ceftobiprole and their combination with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates recovered at two centers in Turkey. Activities of ceftaroline and ceftobiprole were tested against 100 MRSA isolates using gradient diffusion method. Activities of ceftaroline and ceftobiprole in combination with trimethopri...
