Risk factors for Nocardia infection among allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant recipients: A case-control study of the Infectious Diseases Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation
Nocardiosis is a rare but life-threatening infection after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We aimed at identifying risk factors for nocardiosis after allogeneic HCT and clarifying the effect of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prophylaxis on its occurrence. (Source: Journal of Infection)

A case of disseminated nocardiosis with orbital apex involvement and endophthalmitis
We report a case of disseminated nocardiosis with orbital apex involvement and endophthalmitis in an immunocompromised patient. The patient presented with respiratory sepsis, and later developed complete ptosis and ophthalmoplegia in the left eye. This was on the background of treatment with high-dose prednisolone. Magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancement of the entire clivus, extending into the left orbital apex and cavernous sinus. The patient was initially treated empirically for CNS tuberculosis. Bronchoscopic cultures returned positive for Nocardia farcinica, and the patient was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamet...

Molecular epidemiological and clinical infection characteristics analysis of Ralstonia
ConclusionWe established a sequence typing system with a relatively fine resolution and the PCR assay is a faster and more sensitive method for clinical identification ofRalstonia pickettii. ST9 is the most common sequence types ofRalstonia pickettii. The most common clinical characteristics ofRalstonia pickettii infected patients were cough, sputum, shortness of breath and pulmonary rales. In vitro antibacterial activity of antibiotics and plant essential oils against Escherichia coli MTCC443 supported through the molecular docking and pharmacokinetics study
This study has been made to compare the in vitro antibacterial activity and further validated the same through the molecular docking study of 13 antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, ampicillin, cefotaxime, rifampicin, kanamycin, vancomycin, streptomycin, penicillin, nalidixic acid, trimethoprim, and polymyxin, and 10 EOs such as garlic, tulsi, neem, clove, thyme, peppermint, coriander, tea, lavender, and eucalyptus against the target protein (DNA gyrase) ofE. coli MTCC443.E. coli Microbial Type Culture Collection 443 was found to be highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin (zone of inhibition [ZOI], 2...

Emerging threats of high biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from Pakistan
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical MRSA strains exhibit a substantial potential for biofilm formation, contributing to a resistant phenotype. Routine antibiotic testing in clinical settings that overlook the biofilm aspect may lead to the failure of empiric antibiotic therapy.PMID:38614413 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2024.105592 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)

A retrospective study of intravenous pentamidine for PCP prophylaxis in adult patients with hematological malignancies – its utility during respiratory virus pandemics
In Haematology, prophylaxis for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is recommended for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and in selected categories of intensive chemotherapy for hematological malignancies (HM) [1]. Trimethoprim –sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is the recommended first-line agent, but its use is not straightforward, as it can be associated with myelosuppression and elevation of potassium and creatinine [2]. Furthermore, many patients have a sulfa allergy, and some are G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) d eficient [3]. (Source: International Journal of Infectious Diseases)
