Variations in Antimicrobial Resistance Genes Present in the Rectal Faeces of Seals in Scottish and Liverpool Bay Coastal Waters
Environ Pollut. 2024 Apr 6:123936. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.123936. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotic resistance genes originating from human activity are considered important environmental pollutants. Wildlife species can act as sentinels for coastal environmental contamination and in this study we used qPCR array technology to investigate the variety and abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and integrons circulating within seal populations both near to and far from large human populations located around the Scottish and northwest English coast. Rectal swabs were take...

Z-scheme heterojunction composed of Fe-doped g-C < sub > 3 < /sub > N < sub > 4 < /sub > and Bi < sub > 2 < /sub > MoO < sub > 6 < /sub > for photo-Fenton degradation of antibiotics over a wide pH range: Activity and toxicity assessment
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 5:118886. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118886. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn photo-Fenton technology, the narrower pH range limits its practical application for antibiotic wastewater remediation. Therefore, in this study, a Z-scheme heterojunction photo-Fenton catalyst was constructed by Fe-doped graphite-phase carbon nitride in combination with bismuth molybdate for the degradation of typical antibiotics. Fe doping can shorten the band gap and increase visible-light absorption. Simultaneously, the constructed Z-scheme heterojunction provides a better charge transfer pathway for the photo-Fenton reac...

Powdered activated carbon facilitated degradation of complex organic compounds and tetracycline in stressed anaerobic digestion systems
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Apr 5:130672. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130672. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTetracycline exerts an inhibitory effect on anaerobic digestion, inducing stressed microbial activities and even system failure. Continuous-flow reactors (CFRs) and sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were employed along with the dosage of powdered activated carbon (PAC) to enhance tetracycline removal during anaerobic digestion of complex organic compounds. PAC increased the maximum methane production rate by 15.6% (CFRs) and 13.8% (SBRs), and tetracycline biodegradation by 24.4% (CFRs) and 19.2% (SBRs). CFRs showed highe...

Removal of antibiotics by four microalgae-based systems for swine wastewater treatment under different phytohormone treatment
This study examined the removal of typical antibiotics from simulated swine wastewater. Microalgae-bacteria/fungi symbioses were constructed using Chlorella ellipsoidea, endophytic bacteria (S395-2), and Clonostachys rosea as biomaterials. The growth, photosynthetic performance, and removal of three types of antibiotics (tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and quinolones) induced by four phytohormones were analyzed in each system. The results showed that all four phytohormones effectively improved the tolerance of symbiotic strains against antibiotic stress; strigolactones (GR24) achieved the best performance. At 10-9 M, GR24 ach...

Insight into the key factors and mechanism of excellent tetracycline adsorption on amorphous cobalt carbonate nanosheets
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 4:141840. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141840. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe extensive use of tetracyclines (TCs) has led to their widespread distribution in the environment, causing serious harm to ecosystems because of their toxicity and resistance to decomposition. Adsorption is presently the principal approach to dispose of TCs, and the development of excellent adsorbents is crucial to TC removal. Herein, a novel amorphous cobalt carbonate hydroxide (ACCH) was successfully prepared by a one-step solvothermal method, which was identified as Co(CO3)0·63(OH)0.74·0.07H2O. The ultimate adsorpt...

Physicomechanical characterizations and in vitro release studies of electrospun ethyl cellulose fibers, solvent cast carboxymethyl cellulose films, and their composites
In this study, we electrospun phenytoin (PHT) loaded ethyl cellulose (EC) microfibers and solvent cast tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) loaded carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films with the aim to demonstrate tailorable in vitro drug release behaviors suitable for long-term use of wound dressings. Results from tensile testing showed a significant decrease in average elastic moduli from 8.8 ± 0.6 to 3.3 ± 0.3 MPa after incorporating PHT into EC fibers. PHT-loaded EC fibers displayed a slow and zero-ordered release up to 80 % of the total drug at 48 h, while TCH-loaded CMC films demonstrated a rapid and complete release with...

Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns in Patients with Vaginal Discharge: A 2019-2022 Analysis at the National Health Laboratory in Eritrea
CONCLUSION: Most gram-negative bacteria displayed higher resistance of >45% to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline. Among gram-positive bacteria, a higher resistance rate with ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, oxacillin, vancomycin, and penicillin G was recorded. S. aureus showed no resistance to rifampicin and clindamycin, and Strep. spp. indicated 100% resistance to rifampicin and vancomycin. This study highlights critical gaps and areas for further exploration. Expanding the spectrum of antibiotics tested and investigating underlying multidrug resistance mechanisms would...

Distribution of antimicrobial resistance and virulence markers in chicken originated Proteus  mirabilis isolates
Acta Vet Hung. 2024 Apr 4. doi: 10.1556/004.2023.00990. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProteus mirabilis is a common enteric bacterium in livestock and humans. The increase and spread of the antimicrobial resistant P. mirabilis is considered alarming worldwide. Transmission mainly occurs through consumption of contaminated poultry products. We investigated antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence markers in broiler chicken-originated P. mirabilis isolates from 380 fecal samples. Phenotypic AMR test was performed against seventeen different antimicrobials. Genotypic AMR test was performed to detect sixteen different AMR ...
