The future of chemical pleurodesis: A review of novel and investigational sclerosant agents
Am J Med Sci. 2024 Apr 24:S0002-9629(24)01168-6. doi: 10.1016/j.amjms.2024.04.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChemical pleurodesis is a technique in which an injurious and inflammatory substance is instilled into the pleural cavity to cause adhesion and fibrosis. It is commonly used in the management of recurrent malignant pleural effusions. Historically, many different types of sclerosants have been described, though only a few, including talc, the tetracycline derivatives, and anti-septic compounds such as silver nitrate and iodopovidone, have found their way into mainstream use. However, over the past several years, ...

Genotypic and phenotypic antimicrobial resistance of Irish Clostridioides difficile isolates, 2022
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that for moxifloxacin, tetracycline and clindamycin, phenotypic resistance in C. difficile can be predicted by genetic indicators and used for public health purposes. However, for the other five antibiotics, the model is not accurate and further development is necessary.PMID:38670525 | DOI:10.1016/j.anaerobe.2024.102857 (Source: Anaerobe)

Attuning doped ZnO-based composites for an effective light-driven mineralization of pharmaceuticals via PMS activation
In this study, we investigated the effect of doping ZnO nanoparticles with either copper, gallium or indium on the structure, morphology, photophysical properties and photocatalytic mineralization of pharmaceuticals. Their architecture was further improved through the fabrication of composites, pairing the best performing doped ZnO with either BaFe12O19 or nickel nanoparticles. Their suitability was tested on a complex 60-ppm multi-pollutant solution (tetracycline, levofloxacin and lansoprazole). The activation strategy combined photocatalysis with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as an environmentally friendly source of highly oxi...

Isolation and Identification of < em > Pasteurella multocida < /em > and < em > Mannheimia haemolytica < /em > from Pneumonic Small Ruminants and Their Antibiotic Susceptibility in Haramaya District, Eastern Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: This study showed that M. haemolytica and P. multocida are the common causes of mannheimiosis and pasteurellosis in small ruminants, respectively, and isolates were resistant to commonly used antibiotics in the study area. Thus, an integrated vaccination strategy, antimicrobial resistance monitoring, and avoidance of stress-inducing factors are recommended.PMID:38655561 | PMC:PMC11039012 | DOI:10.1155/2024/5605552 (Source: The Scientific World Journal)

Effect of Antimicrobial Agent Coating on Physicochemical and Biologic Properties of Implant Abutments: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: This review showed that there is still no consensus on which is the better antimicrobial agent and which coated materials have the better performance. However, the association of surface coating of abutments with antimicrobials is feasible and can benefit many patients, which can support their clinical use to favor the healing process and prevent infections that can lead to treatment failure with dental implants.PMID:38657216 | DOI:10.11607/jomi.9992 (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants)
