One Health-based management for sustainably mitigating tetracycline-resistant Aeromonas hydrophila-induced health risk
Environ Pollut. 2024 Apr 8:123943. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.123943. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAeromonas hydrophila has ability to spread tetracycline resistance (tetR) under stresses of oxytetracycline (OTC), one of the most important antibiotics in aquaculture industry. Even though environmental reservoir of Aeromonas allows it to be at interfaces across One Health components, a robust modelling framework for rigorously assessing health risks is currently lacking. We proposed a One Health-based approach and leveraged recent advances in quantitative microbial risk assessment appraised by available dataset to interpre...

Crucifer Lesion-Associated Xanthomonas Strains Show Multi-Resistance to Heavy Metals and Antibiotics
In this study, multi-resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics were evaluated in local Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) and co-isolated Xanthomonas melonis (Xmel) strains from infected crucifer plants in Trinidad. Resistance to cobalt, cadmium, zinc, copper, and arsenic (V) was observed in both Xanthomonas species up to 25 mM. Heavy metal resistance (HMR) genes were found on a small plasmid-derived locus with ~ 90% similarity to a Stenotrophomonas spp. chromosomal locus and a X. perforans pLH3.1 plasmid. The co-occurrence of mobile elements in these regions implies their organization on a composite transposon-l...

A Multidrug-Resistant Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-Producing Enterobacter hormaechei Strain from Mixed Sprouts
Curr Microbiol. 2024 Apr 9;81(5):131. doi: 10.1007/s00284-024-03663-3.ABSTRACTFresh vegetables can harbor antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales. Enterobacter hormaechei is a bacterium belonging to the Enterobacterales order and the most commonly identified nosocomial pathogen of Enterobacter cloacae complex. The purpose of this study was to characterize a multi-drug resistant ESBL-producing E. hormaechei strain isolated from a sample of mixed sprouts. Vegetable samples were pre-enriched in buffered peptone water, followed by enrichment in Enterobacteria En...
