Effect of TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibers stabilized Pickering emulsion of cinnamon essential oil on structure and properties of gelatin composite films
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Feb 22:130344. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130344. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPure gelatin film often exhibits high hydrophilicity and a lack of antibacterial activity, hindering its practical application in the field of food preservation. To address these issues, we incorporated 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized bacterial cellulose (TOBC) nanofibers stabilized cinnamon essential oil (CEO) Pickering emulsions into the gelatin matrix to develop active food packaging films. The study revealed that the good distribution of emulsion droplets in the film matrix. While wi...

Influence of chitin nanofibers and gallic acid on physical-chemical and biological performances of chitosan-based films
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Feb 16:130159. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130159. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, chitosan films loaded with gallic acid and different content of chitin nanofibers were prepared and subjected to different characterization techniques. The results showed that the inclusion of gallic acid to chitosan films caused moderate decrease in water vapor permeability (by 29 %) and increased tensile strength of films (by 169 %) in comparison to the neat chitosan films. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of chitin nanofibers up to 30 % into chitosan/gallic acid films additionally improved...

High-strength, antifogging and antibacterial ZnO/carboxymethyl starch/chitosan film with unique "Steel Wire Mesh" structure for strawberry preservation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Dec 29:129090. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.129090. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, a multifunctional preservative film of ZnO/carboxymethyl starch/chitosan (ZnO/CMS/CS) with the unique "Steel Wire Mesh" structure is fabricated by the chemical crosslinked of ZnO NPs, CMS and CS. Unlike traditional nano-filled polymer film, the formation of the "Steel Wire Mesh" structure of ZnO/CMS/CS film is based on the synergistic effect of ZnO NPs filled CMS/CS and the coordination crosslinked between CMS/CS and Zn2+ derived from ZnO NPs. Thanks to the "Steel Wire Mesh" structure, the tensile stren...

Development of hyaluronic acid based polysaccharide-protein composite edible coatings for preservation of strawberry fruit
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Dec 22:128932. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.128932. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith the growing demand for extending the shelf-life of perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables, there is continued interest towards the development of edible coatings derived from natural sources. To avoid rapid dissolution, water insoluble polysaccharide such as chitosan has been widely explored. In this work, we developed robust hyaluronic acid-based edible polysaccharide-protein coatings by combining it (hyaluronic acid) with chitosan and gelatin to introduce additional antioxidant properties. This work is...

Fisetin, a dietary flavonoid, promotes transintestinal cholesterol excretion through the activation of PPAR δ
This study aimed to investigate the regulatory effect of fisetin on cholesterol elimination through novel transintestinal cholesterol excretion (TICE) pathway. A hypercholesterolemic mouse model and human colon epithelial cancer cell line Caco-2 were utilized to conduct the study. In hypercholesterolemic mice, fisetin (25 mg/kg) treatment reduced serum total cholesterol by 46.48% and significantly decreased lipid accumulation in the liver. Furthermore, fisetin administration led to a substantial increase in the fecal neutral sterol contents, including coprostanol, coprostanone, dihydrocholesterol, and cholesterol. Specific...
