High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) reinforces solid encapsulation of d-limonene into V-type starch and its application in strawberry storage
In this study, limonene was solid encapsulated into V6-starch under ambient pressure (AP) and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP). The maximum loading capacity reached 639.0 mg/g after HHP treatment, and the highest encapsulation efficiency was 79.9 %. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) results showed that the ordered structure of V6-starch was ameliorated with limonene, which avoided the reduction of the space between adjacent helices within V6-starch generated by HHP treatment. Notably, HHP treatment may force molecular permeation of limonene from amorphous regions into inter-crystalline amorphous regions and crystalline regions as the...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1865: Strawberry Fragaria x ananassa cv. Festival: A Polyphenol-Based Phytochemical Characterization in Fruit and Leaf Extracts
vo-Castro Berry fruits are an important dietary source of health-promoting antioxidant polyphenols. Interestingly, berry leaves of diverse species, including strawberries, have shown higher bioactive phytochemical content in the leaves than in the fruit. Moreover, the vegetative part of the plants is usually discarded, representing a presumably large source of underutilized bioactive biomass. In this investigation, the polyphenol profiles of tropical highland strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa cv. Festival) leaves and fruits were compared by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (UHPLC...

Obtaining poly (lactic acid) nanofibers encapsulated with peppermint essential oil as potential packaging via solution-blow-spinning
In this study, nanofiber mats of poly (lactic acid)/ polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) blend incorporated with peppermint essential oil (PO) at different ratios (5-20 % v/w) were produced by solution-blow-spinning (SBS) for potential packaging application. Electron microscopy showed a cylindrical and interlaced morphology for PLA/PEG/PO and a significant increase in the diameter (139-192 nm) of the nanofibers by increasing PO content. All nanofibers showed high thermal stability (278-345 °C) suitable for use in the food industry. Nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectrum confirmed PO in the nanofibers after SBS. ATR-FTIR ...

Molecularly imprinted ormosil as a sorbent for targeted dispersive solid phase micro extraction of pyriproxyfen from strawberry samples
Chemosphere. 2023 Jan 23:137835. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.137835. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNovel molecularly imprinted organically modified silica was prepared by reacting acrylamide and 3-(tri-methoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate followed by condensation and hydrolysis with tetraethyl ortho-silicate for the determination of pyriproxyfen. The sorbent proved to be highly selective for the template molecule, pyriproxyfen. The characterization of sorbent was carried out using SEM, BET and TGA. The prominent peaks in FTIR at 3700 cm-1 and 1071 cm-1 confirmed the stretching of amide group's N-H and Si-O-Si bond linkage...

Performance-enhanced regenerated cellulose film by adding grape seed extract
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Jan 19:123290. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.123290. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEco-friendly packaging material with intelligent colorimetric performance has been a requirement for food safety and quality. This work focused on a food packaging material from regenerated cellulose films that added the grape seed extract and polyethylene glycol 200. FTIR and SEM techniques were employed to prove the compatibility of GSE with cellulose matrix. The composite film showed an enhanced elongation at break (16.61 %) and tensile strength (33.09 MPa). The addition of PEG and GSE also improved the water cont...

Waffles
As a transplant, I wasn’t familiar with the city’s geography. But I knew where the streets were, and that’s where we went. We all piled into the van—the outreach coordinator, nurse, attending, and I—and headed to the edges of town. I noticed I was the only member of the team dressed in scrubs; the rest of the group opted for regular clothes. Despite wearing what was typically deemed “casual” for our profession, I felt conspicuous. Luckily, our patients didn’t seem to mind. “Street rounds” began outside a restaurant. The first gentleman we came across had been living unhoused in the area for ages. Up...

OCNs sugarcane fibers are firstly hydrolyzed using ammonium persulphate (APS). Then, TiO2NPs@OCNs nanocomposites are made in situ with OCNs using a green water-based sol-gel synthesis. Gram (+) microorganisms as well as Gram (-) bacteria are used to test...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 121: Genome-Wide Identification and Characterization of Argonaute, Dicer-like and RNA-Dependent RNA Polymerase Gene Families and Their Expression Analyses in Fragaria spp.
This study is the first report of a genome-wide analysis of AGO, DCL, and RDR gene families in Fragaria spp., in which we provide basic genomic information and expression patterns for these genes. Additionally, this study provides a basis for further research on the functions of these genes and some evidence for the evolution between diploid and octoploid strawberries. (Source: Genes)
