Food Habits of Raccoon Dogs at An Agricultural Area in Shikoku, Western Japan
Zoolog Sci. 2024 Apr;41(2):185-191. doi: 10.2108/zs230051.ABSTRACTThe diet of raccoon dogs, which live in close proximity to agricultural fields in Matsuyama, western Japan, was studied throughout the year by the fecal analysis method (n = 114). Fruits were most important, accounting for 30-40% of the diet except in winter. Crops were next in importance, accounting for 10-30%. It was characteristic that the proportion of crops was greater and more stable than in other "satoyama" or rural areas in Japan. Crops included rice (Oryza sativa), wheat, sesame (Sesamum indicum), strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa), kiwi fruit (Act...

Konjac glucomannan films incorporated pectin-stabilized Mandarin oil emulsions: Structure, properties, and application in fruit preservation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 3:131292. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131292. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo enhance the water-resistance and antibacterial properties of KGM films, mandarin oil (MO), was directly emulsified by pectin and then dispersed to the KGM matrix. The effect of MO concentration (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2 wt%) on the performance of the film-forming emulsions as well as the emulsion films was investigated. The results revealed that pectin could encapsulate and protect MO, and KGM as film matrix could further contributed to the high stability of the film-forming emulsions. The FT-IR, XRD, and SEM sugges...

Fractionation of metals in soil for strawberry cultivation: Effect on metal migration in food chain and application in risk assessment
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 1:118840. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.118840. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough trace metals in strawberry production system have attracted growing attention, little is known about metal fractionation in soil for strawberry cultivation. We hypothesized that the metal fractions in soil influenced by strawberry production had significant effect on food chain transport of metals and their risk in soil. Here, samples of strawberries and soil were gathered in the Yangtze River Delta, China to verify the hypothesis. Results showed that the acid-soluble Cr, Cd, and Ni in soil for strawberry cultivation w...

Tolylfluanid induces developmental toxicity via liver dysfunction in zebrafish embryos
ConclusionTolylfluanid disrupts organogenesis, particularly in motor neurons and the liver, during early development in zebrafish. Additionally, the results provide reference points for the concentration conditions that can be used in aquatic ecosystems. (Source: Molecular and Cellular Toxicology)

Concentration of foodborne viruses eluted from fresh and frozen produce: Applicability of ultrafiltration
The objective of this study was to optimize an ultrafiltration (UF) concentration method for HAV and HuNoVs present on various fresh and frozen produce. The detection range of the optimized method and its applicability to different food matrices was compared to the reference method ISO 15216-1:2017. Strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, lettuce, and green onion (25 g) were contaminated with HAV, HuNoV GI.7 and HuNoV GII.4 and then recovered therefrom by elution. A commercial benchtop UF device was used for the concentration step. Viral RNA was extracted and detected by RT-qPCR. From fresh strawberries, recovery of HAV loaded ...
