Electroconductive cardiac patch based on bioactive PEDOT:PSS hydrogels
This study introduces a synthetic patch with a bioactive surface designed to swiftly restore functionality to the damaged myocardium. The patch combines a composite, soft, and conductive hydrogel-based on (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene-sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This cardiac patch exhibits a reasonably high electrical conductivity (40 S/cm) and a stretchability up to 50% of its original length. Our findings reveal its resilience to 10% cyclic stretching at 1 Hz with no loss of conductivity over time. To mediate a strong cell-scaffold adhesion, we biofunctionalize the hydrogel with a N-cadh...

Novel natural osthole-inspired amphiphiles as membrane targeting antibacterials against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Eur J Med Chem. 2024 Apr 26;271:116449. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2024.116449. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a widespread pathogen causing clinical infections and is multi-resistant to many antibiotics, making it urgent need to develop novel antibacterials to combat MRSA. Herein, we designed and prepared a series of novel osthole amphiphiles 6a-6ad by mimicking the structures and function of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Antibacterial assays showed that osthole amphiphile 6aa strongly inhibited S. aureus and 10 clinical MRSA isolates with MIC values of 1-2 μg/mL, comparab...

However, antibacterial drugs have poor light absorption and utilization rates, which limits their practical application. Constructing two-dimensional (2D) heterojunctions from materials with matching photophysical properties has emerged as a highly effective strategy for achieving high-efficiency photo-antibacterial performance. The Spx stress regulator confers high-level β-lactam resistance and decreases susceptibility to last-line antibiotics in methicillin-resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em >
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 May 1:e0033524. doi: 10.1128/aac.00335-24. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are a leading cause of mortality worldwide. MRSA has acquired resistance to next-generation β-lactam antibiotics through the horizontal acquisition of the mecA resistance gene. Development of high resistance is, however, often associated with additional mutations in a set of chromosomal core genes, known as potentiators, which, through poorly described mechanisms, enhance resistance. The yjbH gene was recently identified as a hot spot for adaptiv...

Quorum-sensing < em > agr < /em > system of < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > primes gene expression for protection from lethal oxidative stress
Elife. 2024 Apr 30;12:RP89098. doi: 10.7554/eLife.89098.ABSTRACTThe agr quorum-sensing system links Staphylococcus aureus metabolism to virulence, in part by increasing bacterial survival during exposure to lethal concentrations of H2O2, a crucial host defense against S. aureus. We now report that protection by agr surprisingly extends beyond post-exponential growth to the exit from stationary phase when the agr system is no longer turned on. Thus, agr can be considered a constitutive protective factor. Deletion of agr resulted in decreased ATP levels and growth, despite increased rates of respiration or fermentation at ap...

Delayed infections following polybutylate-coated polyester (Ethibond) suture frontalis suspension surgery for severe blepharoptosis
CONCLUSION: Frontalis suspension with Ethibond has an 8% incidence of delayed infections, with Staphylococcus aureus as the most common organism. The authors recommend early sling removal in all patients with infection and recommend consideration of an alternative material in the event of future revision surgery.PMID:38687955 | DOI:10.1080/01676830.2024.2338789 (Source: Orbit)

Talanta. 2024 Apr 13;275:126073. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2024.126073. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has a high incidence in infectious hospitals and communities, highlighting the need for early on-site detection due to its resistance to methicillin antibiotics. The present study introduces a highly sensitive detection system for mecA, a crucial methicillin marker, utilizing an RCA-based isothermal exponential amplification reaction. The G-quadruplex-based isothermal exponential amplification reaction (GQ-EXPAR) method designs probes to establish G-quadruplex secondary struc...
