The prevalence of relational basic concepts on core vocabulary lists for AAC: is frequency enough?
We examined the overlap of these words on nine core vocabulary lists. We found that most concepts were not represented on any core lists. Additionally, there was relatively little overlap of RBCs between the core lists. These findings suggest that vocabulary selection resources created using exclusively a core vocabulary approach may have limited utility for identifying many concepts that preschool and early elementary students are expected to know and use. Implications for AAC research and practice are discussed with emphasis on the need for further consideration of RBCs within vocabulary selection practice and the field ...

The confidence and competence of speech language pathologists in augmentative and alternative communication: a scoping review
Augment Altern Commun. 2024 Apr 15:1-14. doi: 10.1080/07434618.2024.2333383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAugmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a core component of speech pathology practice. However, international literature has highlighted that speech language pathologists (SLPs) may not feel confident or competent in this area. Confidence and competence are critical factors in therapy as they can impact the quality-of-service provision. The purpose of this scoping review was to investigate the confidence/competence of SLPs in AAC. A systematic scoping search was conducted using four databases to identify r...

Typical spelling errors of Grade 1 spellers of Polish: An exploratory study adapting the POMAS classification to the Polish orthography
AbstractThis paper presents the adaptation of the POMAS classification of spelling errors (Silliman et al., Developmental Neuropsychology 29:93 –123, 2006, Bahr et al., Journal of Speech, Language& Hearing Research 55:1587 –1599, 2012; International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism 18:73–91, 2015) to Polish orthography. We identified the most common phonological, orthographic, and/or morphological errors committed by Polish Grade 1 spellers based on a writing-to-dictation task. Some of the error typ es were included in the original POMAS; some we added, following the classification rationale, to ad...

Children's speech, language and communication skills and parental knowledge in the growing up in New Zealand cohort
CONCLUSION: Parents can offer valuable insights about their children, but in many cases their level of concern about SLCN did not align with a professional view which reflects a more nuanced understanding of children's speech and language and the impact on future communication skills and needs. Increased awareness through public health messaging specifically regarding lifelong influences of communication challenges will aid in prevention, early detection and intervention.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Parent's expectations of child speech and language development will inform how responsive they...

Positive effects of speech and language therapy group interventions in primary progressive aphasia: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: The literature on speech and language therapy group interventions for PPA shows promise of positive effects on communication function and psychosocial well-being of both pwPPA and their care partners. Speech and language therapists can consider these published interventions when designing and implementing similar groups, but more robust evidence is required to confirm the relative effectiveness of this approach.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Speech pathology led group intervention shows some promise in benefitting communication functioning and overall well-being of pwPPA and their ...

Occupational therapy practitioners' experiences with interprofessional collaborative practice
This study evaluated occupational therapists in the United States experiences of IPCP with additional inquiry into which healthcare professionals occupational therapy practitioners interact with and how they engage in collaboration, during IPCP. An exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey; 142 occupational therapy practitioners responded. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and bivariate analyses; open-ended responses underwent consensual qualitative analysis. Participants reported most often engaging in IPCP with physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, physici...
