Bilinguals from Larynx to Lips: Exploring Bilingual Articulatory Strategies with Anatomic MRI Data
Lang Speech. 2024 Apr 28:238309231224790. doi: 10.1177/00238309231224790. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe goal of this article is to illustrate the use of MRI for exploring bi- and multi-lingual articulatory strategies. One male and one female speaker recorded sets of static midsagittal MRIs of the whole vocal tract, producing vowels as well as consonants in various vowel contexts in either the male's two or the female's three languages. Both speakers were native speakers of English (American and Australian English, respectively), and both were fluent L2 speakers of French. In addition, the female speaker was a heritage ...

The Classroom Communication and Collaboration Appraisal: A Comprehensive Tool for Assessing Communication and Collaboration in Classroom Environments
CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the utility of the C3 Appraisal as a valuable tool for evaluating communication and collaboration in classroom environments. Next steps are to test the reliability and validity of the C3 Appraisal on a large data set.PMID:38683060 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00586 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

A Retrospective Study of Acoustic Measures of Glottal Stop Production to Assess Vocal Function in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paresis/Paralysis Patients
CONCLUSIONS: Acoustic GSP measures demonstrated good diagnostic accuracy and some relationship to severity of voice disorder. No significant differences in acoustic measures for medial voiceless fricative consonants between controls and participants with UVFP suggested that voicing cessation for voiceless fricatives differs from voicing cessation for GSP.PMID:38683058 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00576 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Nonword Repetition in Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Revisiting the Case of Cantonese
CONCLUSIONS: NWR can capture TD/DLD group differences in Cantonese-speaking children. Lexicality and sublexicality effects must be considered in designing NWR stimuli for TD/DLD group differentiation. Future studies should replicate the present study on a larger sample size and a younger population as well as examine the diagnostic accuracy of this NWR test.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25529371.PMID:38683057 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-22-00397 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

The Impact of Videofluoroscopic Pulse Rate on Duration and Kinematic Measures in Infants and Adults with Feeding and Swallowing Disorders
AbstractThis investigation assessed the impact of temporal resolution during a videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing (VFSS) on measures of duration and kinematics. Thirty adult and ten infant swallow studies, all acquired at 30 frames and 30 pulses per second, were obtained from a New Mexico hospital. All swallow studies were altered to simulate 15 and 5 pulses per second. Duration measures included pharyngeal response time, duration of upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening, velopharyngeal closure duration and total swallow duration. Kinematic measures were assessed in adults only and included peak hyoid position a...

Role of fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) in children with suspected dysphagia
CONCLUSION: FEES can diagnose structural anomalies of the upper aerodigestive tract and significantly contribute to the detection of aspiration and penetration in this group of patients with suspected dysphagia, detecting moderate and severe dysphagia even in cases when clinical assessment had no suspicion.PMID:38679061 | DOI:10.1016/j.jped.2024.03.008 (Source: Jornal de Pediatria)

Posterior Positioning of Levator Veli Palatini with Intact Nasal Layer and Side-by-Side Bilateral Buccinator Flaps: Modified Approach for Palatal Lengthening
CONCLUSION: This modified palatal lengthening technique results in a significant lengthening of the palate while maintaining favorable speech outcomes. Quebec French Translation, Cultural Adaptation, and Validation of the Singing Voice Handicap Index-10 Questionnaire for Singers with Dysphonia
Dysphonia is a common voice disorder that can significantly impact a person ’s life; it requires a collaborative evaluation by both speech-language pathologists and otolaryngologists that takes the patient’s perspective into account. The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Singing Voice Handicap Index questionnaire (SVHI-10), a reliable patient-r eported outcome evaluation tool for dysphonia, for the Quebec French population. The result is the Singing Voice Handicap Index-10-QC (SVHI-10-QC). (Source: Journal of Voice)
