Associations between social anxiety, physiological reactivity, and speech disfluencies in autistic young adults and controls
CONCLUSIONS: SA or speaking-related physiological reactivity were not associated with disfluency frequencies or stuttering severity in autistic persons. Negative association between physiological reactivity and disfluency frequencies found in the control group may indicate that the physiological arousal may impact the speech production process by reducing the overt disfluencies.PMID:38593561 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcomdis.2024.106425 (Source: Journal of Communication Disorders)

A demonstration of incorporating discriminative stimuli into an AAC device during functional communication training
Augment Altern Commun. 2024 Apr 8:1-9. doi: 10.1080/07434618.2024.2333380. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFunctional communication training (FCT) is an effective intervention for teaching communication responses and reducing challenging behavior. One limitation of FCT is that frequent reinforcement may be impractical or impossible in many situations. Recently, Mitteer et al. published a tutorial in the journal AAC that provided video models on how to implement an empirically supported strategy for thinning reinforcement during FCT, known as FCT with discriminative stimuli, when teaching with an augmentative and alternative ...

A Letter to the Editor on “Effect of Visual Biofeedback Obtained Using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument on the Suprahyoid Muscle Activation Level During Effortful Swallowing Maneuver”
AbstractThe author has provided an alternative biofeedback method to help maintain the effortful swallowing (ES) maneuver target effort to utilize a constantly high swallowing pressure. The author has identified ES with visual feedback (i.e. the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI)) produced higher EMG activation levels than without. However, the author accepted higher activation levels as higher muscle force production, attributed the lower EMG activation levels in 4th set to fatigue, and did not consider other possibilities. As the author stated in the discussion “his/her method caused participants to focus more eff...

A scoping review of AAC interventions for children and young adults with simultaneous visual and motor impairments: Clinical and research Implications
Augment Altern Commun. 2024 Apr 5:1-19. doi: 10.1080/07434618.2024.2327044. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndividuals with multiple disabilities are among the most challenging to serve and AAC teams often lack direction in determining effective interventions. The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize the research evidence on AAC interventions for individuals with complex communication needs and simultaneous motor, and visual impairments as part of their multiple disabilities; to consider implications for practice; and to determine gaps and directions for future research. A total of 27 studies were identified and ...

The Impact of Verb Inflectional Distance on Morphological Awareness in Arabic Diglossia: Insights From a Longitudinal Study (Kindergarten to Grade 3)
CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate the substantial impact of verb inflectional distance on morphological awareness development before and during the initial process of learning to read. Results are discussed within the context of linguistic distance and the development of metalinguistic processing skills with implications for assessment and intervention.PMID:38579180 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00456 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)
