Acoustic Analyses of Tone Productions in Sequencing Contexts Among Cantonese-Speaking Preschool Children With and Without Childhood Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that Cantonese-speaking children with CAS had difficulty in varying F0 within syllables as compared to those without CAS, suggesting pitch variation difficulty and language-specific impairment profiles in CAS. Future investigations of objective measures for identifying Cantonese speakers with CAS and cross-linguistic investigations using growth curve analysis and the TST are suggested.PMID:38662942 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00383 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Does Native Language Matter in Perceptual Ratings of Dysarthria?
CONCLUSIONS: The data support both language-universal and language-specific aspects in perceiving dysarthria characteristics, such that native language plays a role, especially when rating articulatory- and rhythmic-related characteristics. The findings are discussed with respect to the role of linguistic information, such as phonetic inventories and prosodic structures, in perceiving dysarthria characteristics.PMID:38662924 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00668 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Dysphagia Rehabilitation in Dysphagic Patients with Acute or Critical Illness: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
AbstractDysphagia or swallowing dysfunction is common in patients with acute or critical illness, and diverse methods of dysphagia rehabilitation are provided worldwide. We aimed to examine the efficacy of rehabilitation to treat dysphagia in patients with acute or critical illness. We searched PubMed, ICHUSHI, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from inception to November 22, 2023 for relevant randomized controlled trials. We focused on dysphagic patients with acute or critical illness who were not orotracheally intubated. Our target intervention included conventional rehabilitation and nerve stim...

Reliability and Validity Analyses of the Practical Assessment of Dysphagia Test in Stroke
In this study, PAD test data from 109 patients with stroke were used. The internal consistency of the PAD was analyzed using Cronbach ’s α value. Inter- and intra-rater reliabilities of the PAD were analyzed using Kappa coefficient. Concurrent validity was evaluated based on the correlation between PAD and the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). The diagnostic accuracy of the PAD test in patients with stroke was measured using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Intra- and inter-rater reliabilities (Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) = 0.98 and 0.99, respectively) were sig...

Spectral features related to the auditory perception of twang-like voices
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the intra-rater reliability scores, four judges were identified as suitable to be included in the analyses. Results showed that the frequency of F1 and F2 correlated strongly with the auditory-perception of twang-like voices (0.90 and 0.74, respectively), whereas F3 showed a moderate negative correlation (-0.52). The frequency difference between F1 and F3 showed a strong negative correlation (-0.82). The mean energy between 1-2 kHz and 2-3 kHz correlated moderately (0.51 and 0.42, respectively). The frequency of F4 and F5, and the energy above 3 kHz showed weak correlations. Since the spectral changes...
