Back-trajectory analyses for evaluating the transboundary transport effect to the aerosol pollution in South Korea
This study performed a back-trajectory analysis to determine the influence of transboundary transport on the extent of aerosol pollution in South Korea, based on 5-year PM2.5 measurements (2015‒2019) in five cities covering South Korea. A transboundary transport case was selected if a back trajectory passed over a dedicated region (BOX 1 and BOX 2) in the Yellow Sea. First, we found that the frequency of transboundary transport largely increases in the high pollution case, and this pattern is almost consistent for all months and all five cities, indicating the importance of investigating the horizontal direction of air m...

Genetic risk factors for bortezomib-induced neuropathic pain in an Asian population: A genome-wide association study in South Korea
Bortezomib-induced neuropathic pain (BINP) poses a challenge in multiple myeloma (MM) treatment. Genetic factors play a key role in BINP susceptibility, but research has predominantly focused on Caucasian populations. This research explored novel genetic risk loci and pathways associated with BINP development in Korean MM patients, while evaluating reproducibility of variants from Caucasians. Clinical data and buffy coat samples from 185 MM patients on bortezomib were collected. The cohort was split into discovery and validation cohorts through random stratification of clinical risk factors for BINP. (Source: The Journal of Pain)

Synergistic interaction of co-exposure to humidifier disinfectant chemicals CMIT/MIT and PHMG in lung injury
In this study, we aimed to investigate associations of a mixture of chloromethylisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT) and polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG), which had been used as humidifier disinfectants (HDs) in South Korea, with HD-associated lung injury (HDLI) in a Korean population (n = 4058) with HD exposure through use of HD products. Exposure to HD was retrospectively assessed by an interview-based standardized survey, and HDLI was determined by clinical assessment. After adjusting for covariates, PHMG-specific exposure indices (e.g., amount of use, indoor air concentration, and weekly exposure level) w...

The Impact of Infectious Mononucleosis History on the Risk of Developing Lymphoma and Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: a Retrospective Large-Scale Cohort Study using National Health Insurance Data in South Korea
CONCLUSION: This study suggests that individuals with a history of IM have an elevated risk of developing lymphoma and NPC in South Korea, emphasizing the importance of vigilant follow-up and monitoring. The results advocate for heightened awareness and potential national monitoring policies to address the long-term health implications of EBV infection and to implement preventive measures.PMID:38665055 | DOI:10.4143/crt.2023.1356 (Source: Cancer Control)

Identifying Contact Time Required for Secondary Transmission of Clostridioides difficile Infections by Using Real-Time Locating System
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 May;30(5):908-915. doi: 10.3201/eid3005.231588.ABSTRACTConsidering patient room shortages and prevalence of other communicable diseases, reassessing the isolation of patients with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is imperative. We conducted a retrospective study to investigate the secondary CDI transmission rate in a hospital in South Korea, where patients with CDI were not isolated. Using data from a real-time locating system and electronic medical records, we investigated patients who had both direct and indirect contact with CDI index patients. The primary outcome was secondary CDI transmi...

Pedobacter rhodius sp. nov. and Pedobacter punctiformis sp. nov., isolated from soil
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2024 Apr 26;117(1):72. doi: 10.1007/s10482-024-01963-z.ABSTRACTTwo Gram-staining negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, pinkish-colored and rod-shaped strains, designated SJ11T and HCMS5-2 T, were isolated from soil in South Korea. The growth of strain SJ11T was observed from 15℃ to 35℃ (optimum, 30℃), from pH 6.0 to 11.0 (optimum, pH 6.0-7.0) and with NaCl 0-1% (w/v) (optimum, 0%) and that of strain HCMS5-2 T was observed from 4℃ to 40℃ (optimum, 25℃), from pH 6.0 to pH 8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with NaCl 0-5% (w/v) (optimum, 0-1%).
