Genetic Characteristics of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing < em > Salmonella < /em > Isolated from Retail Meats in South Korea
J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2024 Mar 22;34(5):1-10. doi: 10.4014/jmb.2312.12018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarlier studies have validated the isolation of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Salmonella (ESBL-Sal) strains from food. While poultry is recognized as a reservoir for Salmonella contamination, pertinent data regarding ESBL-Sal remains limited. Consequently, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has isolated Salmonella spp. from retail meat and evaluated their antibiotic susceptibility and genetic characteristics via whole-genome sequencing. To further elucidate these aspects, this study investigates the pre...

The use of the internal transcribed spacer region for phylogenetic analysis of the microsporidian parasite Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei infecting whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and for the development of a nested PCR as its diagnostic tool
In this study, the ITS-1 region sequence (~600-bp) of EHP was first identified, and primers for a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting that sequence were designed. A newly developed nested-PCR method successfully detected the EHP in various shrimp (Penaeus vannamei and P. monodon) and related samples, including water and feces collected from Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, India, and Malaysia. The primers did not cross-react with other hosts and pathogens, and this PCR assay is more sensitive than existing PCR detection methods targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) and spore wall protein (SWP) g...

Government Initiatives for Research Ethics During COVID-19 Pandemic in Korea
CONCLUSION: As a result of South Korea's commitment to ethical principles in their pandemic response, the medical system did not experience collapses due to the pandemic, and pandemic research was conducted with careful ethical considerations. The pandemic ethics immunization during the Middle East respiratory syndrome epidemic in 2015 laid the foundation for prompt government initiatives that ensured both pandemic research ethics and pandemic response ethics.PMID:38565174 | PMC:PMC10985498 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2024.39.e116 (Source: Journal of Korean Medical Science)

Complications and Reinterventions of Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty in a Korean Population: 14-Year Experience in Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty
CONCLUSIONS: After primary RTSA in a Korean population, the complication, reintervention, and revision rates were 13.94%, 5.63%, and 4.02%, respectively. Careful evaluation of the complications and adequate treatments should be performed.PMID:38562643 | PMC:PMC10973618 | DOI:10.4055/cios23016 (Source: Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery)

Contents analysis of thyroid cancer-related information uploaded to YouTube by physicians in Korea: endorsing thyroid cancer screening, potentially leading to overdiagnosis
CONCLUSION: This study found that a significant proportion of videos uploaded by medical professionals on thyroid cancer endorse the practice, potentially leading to excessive treatments. The study highlights the need for medical professionals to provide high-quality and unbiased information on social media platforms to prevent the spread of medical misinformation and the need for criteria to judge the content and quality of online health information.PMID:38566004 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-024-18403-2 (Source: Cancer Control)

Comparison of Enlarged Perivascular Spaces in Early-Onset and Late-Onset Alzheimer Disease-related Cognitive Impairment: A Single Clinic-based Study in South Korea
We examined whether there were differences in the presence of centrum semiovale-enlarged perivascular spaces (CSO-ePVS) and basal ganglia-ePVS (BG-ePVS) among patients with Alzheimer disease-related cognitive impairment (ADCI) based on their age of onset. Out of a total of 239 patients with cognitive impairment, 155 with positive amyloid-PET results were included. Among these, 43 had early-onset ADCI (EOADCI) and 112 had late-onset ADCI (LOADCI). Patients with LOADCI exhibited a higher prevalence of hypertension, lacunes, white matter hyperintensities, and BG-ePVS than those with EOADCI. BG-ePVS showed a significant correl...
