The effect of actual and expected income shocks on mental wellbeing: Evidence from three East Asian countries during COVID-19
Econ Hum Biol. 2024 Mar 29;53:101378. doi: 10.1016/j.ehb.2024.101378. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper evaluates the effects of economic shocks to current and expected income reduction on mental wellbeing. We use individual-level data from three East Asian countries; China, Japan, and South Korea, during the early phases of the pandemic when the COVID-induced economic shocks were severe. The findings reveal significant causal effects from current and expected income reduction on different aspects of mental health deterioration, including anxiety, trouble sleeping, boredom, and loneliness. Interestingly, we found th...

The 2018 Heat Wave's Impact on the Mortality of Older People in Seoul, South Korea
This study utilized a cross-sectional study design, using the daily heat index and heat-related mortality data for Seoul, South Korea, in summer 2018. The research used micro-raw data of deaths caused by hypertensive, ischemic heart, and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as heat index data. An effect was observed for the heat index on mortality for individuals over 65 years of age, men, people with spouses, and those ages 75-79 years.PMID:38593089 | DOI:10.1080/19371918.2024.2340082 (Source: Social Work in Public Health)

Epidemiological Characteristics of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Pulmonary Disease in South Korea: A Meta-Analysis of Individual Participant Data
CONCLUSION: We performed a meta-analysis of the clinical characteristics of patients with NTM-PD in South Korea. We found age- and sex-related differences in disease-specific severity. Further investigation would enhance our comprehension of the disease's nature and inherited and acquired host factors.PMID:38590075 | DOI:10.4046/trd.2023.0193 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Fluorine contamination, mobility, and risks in soils at a phosphate-gypsum waste landfill: a new analytical method and comparison with previous methods
This study used a new X-ray fluorescence (XRF)-based analytical method with better precision and sensitivity to evaluate the fluorine concentrations in soil. It was hypothesized that the XRF method with a pellet-synthesizing procedure may effectively analyze the fluorine concentrations in soil with ease and reliability. The total fluorine concentrations determined using XRF were compared with those determined using three different types of analytical protocols —incineration/distillation, alkaline fusion, and aqua regia extraction procedures. Among the three procedures, the incineration/distillation procedure did not show...

Subjective social status, health and well-being among older adults in China and South Korea: a cross-sectional analysis
Conclusion Overall, the results highlight a significant association among social status, subjective health, life satisfaction and general happiness in both the countries. Health policymakers should identify effective strategies to promote healthy ageing and reduce disparities in health and well-being outcomes among older adults from different social backgrounds. Recent trends in the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease in South Korea, 2010-2018
CONCLUSION: The CD incidence has been stable since 2014, but that of UC has increased with a shift to a younger age at peak incidence between 2010 and 2018. IBD clinical outcomes improved over time, with increased use of immunomodulators and biologics.PMID:38577186 | PMC:PMC10989502 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i9.1154 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Factors Associated With Achieving Complete Skin Clearance Compared to Almost Complete Skin Clearance in Patients With Moderate to Severe Psoriasis Treated With Biologics: A Retrospective Chart Review
CONCLUSION: This study suggested that smoking history and psoriatic skin lesions on the anterior lower legs are considered as the risk factors for the failure to achieve a PASI100 response in psoriasis patients treated with biologics.PMID:38576247 | PMC:PMC10995612 | DOI:10.5021/ad.23.074 (Source: Annals of Dermatology)
