Association of exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and phthalates with thyroid hormones in adolescents from HBM4EU aligned studies
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that exposure to PFAS and phthalates is associated with sex-specific differences in thyroid hormone levels in adolescents.PMID:37598845 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2023.116897 (Source: Environmental Research)

Levels of Essential and Trace Elements in Mozzarella Available on the Slovak Market with the Estimation of Consumer Exposure
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Aug 18. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03813-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to determinate the content of some elements in a specific dairy product, mozzarella, in a particular area of western Slovakia and to evaluate the estimation of the risk to the consumers based on the contribution to the provisional tolerable weekly intake. The consumption of mozzarella can contribute to the intake of important elements in the diet, such as calcium and magnesium, along with others. The contents of some toxic and trace elements were low and have not exceeded the permitted limit. In additi...

Analysis of Cdx2 VDR gene polymorphism rs11568820 in association with multiple sclerosis in Slovaks
Neurol Res. 2023 Aug 15:1-7. doi: 10.1080/01616412.2023.2247195. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVitamin D deficiency is involved in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), a severe autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. The gene polymorphism Cdx-2 (rs11568820, G/A) seriously influences the trancriptional activity of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) that binds the vitamin D responsive elements of target genes including HLA-DRB1*15. The aim of the present study in Slovaks was to analyse the association of Cdx-2 variants with the risk of MS and disability progression, and to assess the DRB1*15:01 alle...

Health inequalities in post-COVID-19 outcomes among adults aged 50+ in Europe: has COVID-19 exposed divide between postcommunist countries and Western Europe?
Conclusion Our study suggests that healthy weight and higher education attainment are predictors associated with a lower incidence of post-COVID-19 condition. Health inequality associated with education attainment was particularly relevant in V4. Our results highlight health inequality in which BMI was associated with comorbidities and educational attainment. To reduce obesity prevalence among older people with lower education, raising awareness about the risks of obesity and providing assistance in maintaining a healthy weight are needed. Comparison of ordinary reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) with a newly developed one-step single-tube nested real-time RT-PCR (OSN-qRT-PCR) for sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater
In this study, we attempted to increase the sensitivity of qRT-PCR by developing a one-step single-tube nested qRT-PCR assay (OSN-qRT-PCR). Two variants were developed, oriented to nucleocapsid phosphoprotein gene (N) and to spike protein gene (S), respectively. The performance of conventional qRT-PCR assays oriented to these genes with two novel OSN-qRT-PCR assays were firstly optimized using wastewater artificially contaminated with two encapsidated RNA mimic systems harboring a portion either N or S gene (ENRM and ESRM, respectively). The assays were coupled to a polyethylene glycol-based RNA precipitation/extraction me...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1695: Is Slovakia Almost a Hepatitis D Free Country?
Conclusion: The available data show that Slovakia is one of the countries with a very low prevalence of HDV infection, reaching less than 1% in HBsAg-positive patients. Routine testing for hepatitis D is lacking in Slovakia, and therefore it is necessary to implement testing of all HBsAg-positive individuals according to international recommendations. Randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled multicenter phase III study of prevention of irinotecan-induced diarrhea by a probiotic mixture containing Bifidobacterium, BB-12 ® and Lactobacillus rhamnosus, LGG® in colorectal cancer patients. The Probio SK 006 -Slovak Cooperative Oncology Group trial
This study failed to achieve its primary endpoint, and results suggest a lack of benefit of administered probiotic formula for the prevention of irinotecan-induced diarrhea. However, subgroup analysis suggests a possible benefit in patients with colostomy. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)
