The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Removal of cadmium and cobalt from water by Slovak bentonites: efficiency, isotherms, and kinetic study
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 3. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33133-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSlovak bentonite was used as an effective natural adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) and Co(II). Characterization of the samples was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy with an X-ray energy dispersion spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Adsorption experiments were carried out for pure water and artificial seawater, each containing cobalt and cadmium cations within the concentration range of 5-60 mg/L. The highest bentonite adsorption capacities of t...

The Effect of Loss of Taste and Smell on Meal Preparation, Food Enjoyment, and Quality of Life among Patients of COVID-19: A Systematic Review
To determine the impact of Covid 19 related symptoms of ageusia (loss of taste) and anosmia (loss of smell) on meal preparation/food enjoyment and overall quality of life. This would help Occupational therapists address the disrupted occupational performance patterns, roles, and routines due to COVID-19-induced loss of taste and smell. Aspects of quality of life, meal preparation, and nutrition may be affected. Therefore, it is crucial to formulate client-centered and holistic interventions addressing these problem areas. Host genetic variants associated with COVID-19 reconsidered in a Slovak cohort
We present the results of an association study involving hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with a clinical background during the 3rd pandemic wave of COVID-19 in Slovakia. Seventeen single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in the eleven most relevant genes, according to the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative, were investigated. Our study confirms the validity of the influence of LZTFL1 and 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS)1/OAS3 genetic variants on the severity of COVID-19. For two LZTFL1 SNVs in complete linkage disequilibrium, rs17713054 and rs73064425, the odds ratios of baseline allelic associations...

Detecting Familial Hypercholesterolemia: An Observational Study Leveraging Mandatory Universal Pediatric Total Cholesterol Screening in Slovakia
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal-dominant inherited disorder that is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. FH is characterized by a lifelong exposure to high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), which causes early and accelerated atherogenesis. Patients with genetically defined FH have a risk of coronary heart disease that is>10-fold than that of the general population, and a 3-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease at the same LDL-C level.1 The relative cardiovascular risk patients with FH is highest between the ages of 25 and 40 years. Sleep characteristics and adolescent physical activity-related injuries in sports clubs, leisure time and schools
Conclusion Good sleep quality and sufficient sleep duration were found to play a protective role in relation to PARI in adolescents. The findings suggest implementing sleep interventions in PARI prevention programmes, which must be considered a key component of adolescent PA promotion. (Source: Injury Prevention)

Global burden, risk factors, and trends of non ‐Hodgkin lymphoma: A worldwide analysis of cancer registries
ConclusionsThis study indicates a rising trend of NHL incidence over the past decade- particularly in developed countries, older males, and younger populations. Further research should investigate deeper insights into specific etiology and prognosis of NHL across subtypes, and potential contributors towards these epidemiologic trends. Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1128: Determination of the Prevalence of Microsatellite Instability, BRAF and KRAS/NRAS Mutation Status in Patients with Colorectal Cancer in Slovakia
mes Vanda Repiska Slovakia has one of the highest rates of colorectal cancer among the developed countries, ranking as the second highest in the incidence of this disease for men worldwide. Despite the significant burden on both quality of life and the healthcare system this disease imposes, data on molecular analysis of biomarkers in CRC-diagnosed patients is scarce. In our study, we analyzed confirmed CRC patients from the database of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and evaluated the presence of 4 biomarkers in tumor tissues. Altogether, 83 FFPE tumor tissues from CRC patients listed in the NCI database were an...

Exploring the Diverse Biological Properties of Cannabidiol: A Focus on Plant Growth Stimulation
Chem Biodivers. 2024 Mar 11:e202400274. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202400274. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the current study was to compare some biological activities of edible oils enriched with 10% of cannabidiol (CBD samples) from the Slovak market. In addition, hemp, coconut, argan, and pumpkin pure oils were also examined. The study evaluated the fatty acids content, as well as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, cytotoxic, and phytotoxic activities. The CBD samples presented antimicrobial activity against the tested bacterial strains at higher concentrations (10000 and 5000 mg/L) and antifungal activity agains...

Speech Fluency Production and Perception in L1 (Slovak) and L2 (English) Read Speech
Lang Speech. 2024 Mar 5:238309241230899. doi: 10.1177/00238309241230899. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResearch on fluency in native (L1) and non-native (L2) speech production and perception helps us understand how individual L1 speaking style might affect perceived L2 fluency and how this relationship might be reflected in L1 versus L2 oral assessment. While the relationship between production and perception of fluency in spontaneous speech has been studied, the information provided by reading has been overlooked. We argue that reading provides a direct and controlled way to assess language proficiency that might compleme...

Mercury in the feathers of Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) from Western Carpathian, Slovakia
In this study, mercury (Hg) concentrations were detected in feathers of golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), a bird that typically inhabits alpine and forest areas. The mercury rates in feathers were compared in two groups of eagles: first, estimated home range (breeding, hunting, etc.) was located only in forest and lowland meadow habitats; second, the home range also included alpine habitats-rocks and meadows. Consequently, mercury concentration based on the feather typology were observed and the mercury levels in feathers were also compared among different Slovak Western Carpathian districts. It was found that there was no...

Frequency and timing of adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines; A multi-country cohort event monitoring study
CONCLUSION: Despite some limitations due to study design and study-roll out, CEM studies can allow prompt and almost real-time observations of the safety of medications directly from a patient-centered perspective, which can play a crucial role for regulatory bodies during an emergency setting such as the COVID-19 pandemic.PMID:38448322 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.001 (Source: Vaccine)
