Involvement of Fgf2-mediated tau protein phosphorylation in cognitive deficits induced by sevoflurane in aged rats
CONCLUSION: Sevoflurane elicits a surge in Fgf2 expression in aging rats, directing tau protein phosphorylation through the PI3K/AKT/Gsk3b route, instigating cognitive aberrations.PMID:38493090 | DOI:10.1186/s10020-024-00784-0 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Neuroligin1 in excitatory synapses contributes to long-term cognitive impairments after repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposures
CONCLUSION: We have demonstrated that repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposures decreased inhibitory synaptic inputs (labelled by vGAT) around neurons, which may influence the upregulation of NL1 in hippocampal excitatory synapses and enhanced NL1/PSD95 interaction, ultimately leading to long-term cognitive impairments in adolescent rats. Injecting NL1--AAV reversed this damage. These results suggested that NL1 in excitatory synapses contributes to long-term cognitive impairments after repeated neonatal sevoflurane exposures.PMID:38493982 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2024.114755 (Source: Experimental Neurology)

Prelimbic cortical pyramidal neurons to ventral tegmental area projections promotes arousal from sevoflurane anesthesia
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that PrLPyr neurons and their projections to the VTA are involved in facilitating emergence from sevoflurane anesthesia, with the PrLPyr -VTA pathway exerting its effects through the activation of NMDA receptors within the VTA.PMID:38488453 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14675 (Source: CNS Neuroscience and Therapeutics)

The role of astrocytic γ-aminobutyric acid in the action of inhalational anesthetics
CONCLUSIONS: MAOB knockout mice showed reduced sensitivity to the hypnotic and immobilizing effects of isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane. Behavioral tests revealed that the hypnotic and immobilizing effects of inhalational anesthetics would be mediated by astrocytic GABA.PMID:38484926 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2024.176494 (Source: European Journal of Pharmacology)

Prospective Observational Study of Volatile Sedation with Sevoflurane After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Using the Sedaconda Anesthetic Conserving Device
ConclusionsSevoflurane appears to be a feasible alternative to intravenous sedation in patients with aSAH without intracranial hypertension, as our study did not show negative effects on ICP, cerebral oxygenation, or brain metabolism. Nevertheless, the risk of a decrease of MAP leading to a consecutive CPP decrease should be considered. (Source: Neurocritical Care)

Minimal alveolar concentration of sevoflurane in combination with remimazolam in adults during laryngeal mask insertion: an up-down sequential allocation study
Remimazolam is a novel ultrashort-acting intravenous benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic. The combination of remimazolam and sevoflurane does not increase respiratory sensitivity, produce bronchospasm, or cause o... (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)

Echinatin mitigates sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity through regulation of ferroptosis and iron homeostasis
In conclusion, our study unveils Echinatin as a promising candidate for mitigating sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity. Through the regulation of ferroptosis, iron homeostasis, and inflammation, Echinatin demonstrates significant neuroprotection both in vitro and in vivo. These findings illuminate the potential for Echinatin to enhance the safety of surgical procedures involving sevoflurane anesthesia, minimizing the risk of cognitive deficits and neurotoxicity.PMID:38446592 | DOI:10.18632/aging.205622 (Source: Aging)

Minimum anesthetic concentration of isoflurane and sevoflurane and cardiorespiratory effects of varying inspired oxygen fractions in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus)
AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the minimum anesthetic concentration of isoflurane (MACISO) and sevoflurane (MACSEVO) and evaluate the cardiorespiratory changes induced by varying fractions of inspired oxygen (FiO2) in Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus). Twenty adult penguins (3.53  ± 0.44 kg) of undetermined sex were used. Both MACISO (n = 9) and MACSEVO (n = 13) were established using an up-and-down design. Next, twelve mechanically ventilated penguins were maintained at 1 MACISO or 1 MACSEVO (n = 6 per group) with the FiO2 initially set at 1.0. Three FiO2 values (0.6, 0.4 and ...

Pediatric Ambulatory Surgery: What ’s New, What’s Controversial
This article aims to review recent innovations and trends in ambulatory anesthesia through the lens of the pediatric ambulatory population and strategizes the feasibility of implementation for individual ambulatory sites.Recent FindingsReducing greenhouse gasses via total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and/or low fresh gas flows (FGF), the expansion of 23-h stays, and increasing prescriptions for GLP-1 agonists are all contemporary issues with relevance to pediatric ambulatory surgery.SummaryPediatric patients present unique challenges for environmental stewardship. It is likely eliminating nitrous oxide and using low flows...

Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) improves sevoflurane-induced postoperative cognitive impairment by regulating mitochondrial oxidative stress
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2024 Feb 29;70(2):62-66. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2024.70.2.9.ABSTRACTOne of the most prevalent co-operative disorders is postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), however, its pathogenesis remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate SIRT3's impact on cognitive decline in aged mice under anesthesia. Adeno-associated virus SIRT3 vector (AAV-SIRT3) or empty vector (AAV-VEH) was injected into the hippocampal region of aged mice after sevoflurane induction in order to upregulate the expression of SIRT3. The expression levels of SIRT3, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and apoptotic factors ...
