Very Young Children Exposed to Anesthesia May Be at Higher Risk of Childhood Bipolar Disorder
Infants and toddlers who are exposed to general anesthesia may be at increased risk for bipolar disorder later in childhood compared with infants and toddlers who are not exposed, according to areport inSchizophrenia Bulletin. The association remained after adjusting for other childhood comorbidities and parental psychiatric diagnoses.“In the context of pediatric care, it is essential to recognize the substantial perioperative trauma experienced by children, both physically and psychologically,” wrote Mingyang Sun, M.D., of the People’s Hospital of Zhenghzou University in Henan, China, and colleagues. “Emerging evi...

Advances in pediatric anesthesia services over the past 10  years in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa
CONCLUSION: Progress have been made over the last 10 years in French-speaking SSA to improve infrastructures, human resources, education, medications, and equipment for pediatric anesthesia in French-speaking SSA. However, major efforts must be continued. Standards adapted to the local context should be formulated.PMID:38655778 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14904 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

The incidences of nausea and vomiting after general anesthesia with remimazolam versus sevoflurane: a prospective randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to sevoflurane, opting for remimazolam as an intraoperative hypnotic may decrease the incidence of PONV and reduce antiemetic use for 24 h after laparoscopic surgery.PMID:38637272 | DOI:10.4097/kja.23939 (Source: Korean Journal of Anesthesiology)

Choice of anesthesia technique is associated with earlier hospital discharge and reduced costs after transcatheter transfemoral aortic valve implantation
CONCLUSIONS: Advancements in TAVI technologies, conscious sedation and a collaborative, multidisciplinary team approach reduces overall length of hospital stay and procedure costs.PMID:38617787 | PMC:PMC11009576 | DOI:10.21037/jtd-23-1739 (Source: Journal of Thoracic Disease)

Phosphorylation-dependent allosteric regulation of Cx43 gap junction inhibitor potency
In this study, we used molecular docking, dual whole-cell patch-clamp, and Western blotting to investigate the impact of connexin phosphorylation on GJ chemical gating by α-pinene and other GJ inhibitors (octanol, carbenoxolone, mefloquine, intracellular pH, glycyrrhetinic acid, and sevoflurane) in HeLa cells expressing exogenous Cx43 (full length and truncated at amino acid 258) and other connexins typical of heart and/or nervous system (Cx36, Cx40, Cx45, and Cx47), and in cells expressing endogenous Cx43 (Novikoff and U-87). We found that Ca2+-regulated kinases, such as Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase II, atypical prot...

Influencing Factors of Delirium during Recovery in Urological Postoperative Patients Undergoing Sevoflurane Anaesthesia
CONCLUSIONS: Age, history of diabetes, operation time, ASA classification and sevoflurane inhalation concentration are the influencing factors.PMID:38583014 | DOI:10.56434/j.arch.esp.urol.20247702.27 (Source: Archivos Espanoles de Urologia)

Effects of sevoflurane on lung alveolar epithelial wound healing and survival in a sterile in vitro model of acute respiratory distress syndrome
In this study, we investigated the effects of sevoflurane on lung injury in cultured human carcinoma-derived lung alveolar epithelial (A549) cells. We found that sevoflurane was associated with improved wound healing after exposure to inflammatory cytokines, with preserved cell proliferation but no effect on cell migration properties. Sevoflurane exposure was also associated with enhanced cell viability and active autophagy in A549 cells exposed to cytokines. These findings suggest that sevoflurane may have beneficial effects on lung epithelial injury by promoting alveolar epithelial wound healing and by influencing the su...
