Comprehensive Evidence-based Health Maintenance
The potential of primary prevention to prevent, delay, or ameliorate disease is immense. However, the total spending on preventive services in the US remains astoundingly small and represents a meager 3.5% of total health care spending. Moreover, training focused on prevention in medical schools is often neglected, and time-constrained primary providers frequently omit effective preventive and early detection measures, or perform them perfunctorily. Indeed, preventable conditions of serious consequences including ‘premature’ mortality, cardiovascular events, and major organ failure are ubiquitous with the global obesit...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 437: New Jersey Leaves No Bite Behind: A Climate Change and Food Waste Curriculum Intervention for Adolescents in the United States
ginia Quick Food waste is a major contributor to climate change. Schools offer a unique opportunity to educate on this issue while also reducing food waste generation; however, few climate-change education curricula that include a food waste component have been developed and tested with fidelity. Thus, the purpose of this cluster randomized controlled study was to assess the effectiveness of a climate change and food waste education program called NJ Leaves No Bite Behind (NJLNBB) among fifth-grade students. Lessons on food waste and sustainable food behaviors were developed that aligned with NJ Student Learning Standa...

Changes in the number and outcome of takeaway food outlet planning applications in response to adoption of management zones around schools in England: A time series analysis
Health Place. 2024 Apr 1;87:103237. doi: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103237. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhysical exposure to takeaway food outlets ("takeaways") is associated with poor diet and excess weight, which are leading causes of excess morbidity and mortality. At the end of 2017, 35 local authorities (LAs) in England had adopted takeaway management zones (or "exclusion zones"), which is an urban planning intervention designed to reduce physical exposure to takeaways around schools. In this nationwide, natural experimental study, we used interrupted time series analyses to estimate the impact of this intervention ...

A cross-sectional survey on university students ’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding organ, tissue, and body donation
ConclusionThe findings of our research indicate that knowledge about organ tissue and body donation, as well as the inclination to donate, increased as medical education progressed into clinical practice. Additionally, the level of knowledge among university students on this subject was found to be correlated with whether they had received prior training on the topic. It was observed that there is a need to provide more education for students to understand the importance of organ and body donation. (Source: Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy)

Bacterial community assessment of drinking water and downstream distribution systems in highland localities of Ecuador
J Water Health. 2024 Mar;22(3):536-549. doi: 10.2166/wh.2024.290. Epub 2024 Feb 8.ABSTRACTBacterial communities in drinking water provide a gauge to measure quality and confer insights into public health. In contrast to urban systems, water treatment in rural areas is not adequately monitored and could become a health risk. We performed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to analyze the microbiome present in the water treatment plants at two rural communities, one city, and the downstream water for human consumption in schools and reservoirs in the Andean highlands of Ecuador. We tested the effect of water treatment on the divers...
