Sarcopenic obesity and hypertension in elderly patients: a narrative review of pathophysiology and management strategies
CONCLUSION: Sarcopenic obesity and hypertension present significant challenges to global public health. Addressing arterial stiffness is paramount in managing these conditions effectively. Lifestyle modifications, including weight management and physical activity, remain central to the treatment of sarcopenic obesity, while additional research is needed to explore potential pharmacological options.PMID:37712242 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_10

SPIOMET4HEALTH —efficacy, tolerability and safety of lifestyle intervention plus a fixed dose combination of spironolactone, pioglitazone and metformin (SPIOMET) for adolescent girls and young women with polycystic ovary syndrome: study protocol for a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, fo ur-arm, parallel-group, phase II clinical trial
DiscussionThe present study will be the first to evaluate —in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled way—the efficacy, tolerability and safety of SPIOMET treatment for early PCOS, on top of a lifestyle intervention.Trial registrationEudraCT 2021 –003177-58. The complement system is linked to insulin resistance in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSIONS: IR and metabolic syndrome are positively and independently related to higher serum levels of some serum C elements in patients with SLE with a predominant role of the alternative pathway elements.PMID:37706313 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/t2k0hn

FOXO transcription factors as mediators of stress adaptation
Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1038/s41580-023-00649-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe forkhead box protein O (FOXO, consisting of FOXO1, FOXO3, FOXO4 and FOXO6) transcription factors are the mammalian orthologues of Caenorhabditis elegans DAF-16, which gained notoriety for its capability to double lifespan in the absence of daf-2 (the gene encoding the worm insulin receptor homologue). Since then, research has provided many mechanistic details on FOXO regulation and FOXO activity. Furthermore, conditional knockout experiments have provided a wealth of data as to how FOXOs control development and homeostasi...

Association between different modalities of insulin administration and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSION: The lower prevalence of MAFLD with coexisting significant fibrosis we observed in adults with T1DM using CSII therapy, compared to those using MDI therapy, is primarily mediated by inter-group differences in age.PMID:37708990 | DOI:10.1016/j.diabet.2023.101477

Isoxanthohumol improves obesity and glucose metabolism via inhibiting intestinal lipid absorption with a bloom of Akkermansia muciniphila in mice
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that IX prevents obesity and enhances glucose metabolism by inhibiting dietary fat absorption. This mechanism is linked to suppressing pancreatic lipase activity and shifts in microbial composition, notably an increase in A. muciniphila. These highlight new treatment strategies for preventing metabolic syndrome by boosting the gut microbiota with food components.PMID:37709134 | DOI:10.1016/j.molmet.2023.101797

Comparison of hyperoxia or normoxia resolution of intermittent hypoxia and intermittent hyperoxia episodes on liver histopathology, IGF-1, IGFBP-3, and GHBP in neonatal rats
CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to IH or intermittent hyperoxia during the first few weeks of life regardless of resolution in RA or hyperoxia is detrimental to the immature liver. These findings may suggest that interventions to prevent frequent fluctuations in oxygen saturation during early neonatal life remain a high priority.PMID:37708588 | DOI:10.1016/j.ghir.2023.101559

Probiotics for pancreatic β-cell function: from possible mechanism of action to assessment of effectiveness
Crit Rev Microbiol. 2023 Sep 13:1-21. doi: 10.1080/1040841X.2023.2257776. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia because of insulin resistance (IR) and\or pancreatic β-cell dysfunction. Last century research showed that gut microbiota has a direct effect on metabolism and metabolic diseases. New studies into the human microbiome and its connection with the host is making it possible to develop new therapies for a wide variety of diseases. Inflammation is a well-known precursor to metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of hypertension, viscera...

Regulation of the cortisol axis, glucagon and growth hormone by glucose is altered in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: Altered counter-regulatory hormonal responses to glucose variations are observed at different stages of type 2 diabetes development and may contribute to its progression by promoting insulin resistance and dysglycemia.PMID:37708362 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad549

Inflammation and oxidative stress markers in type 2 diabetes patients with Advanced Carotid atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: Our study is in line with a key role for inflammation in the pathogenesis of diabetic atherosclerosis and highlights the involvement of 2-AA-LPC. Further research is needed to better understand the local processes involved in the alteration of plaque composition in T2DM and to identify potential therapeutic targets.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The MASCADI was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (clinical registration number: NCT03202823).PMID:37710315 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01979-1
