Association between Diurnal Variation of Ozone Concentration and Stroke Occurrence: 24-Hour Time Series Study
by Myung-Hoon Han, Hyeong-Joong Yi, Young-Seo Kim, Yong Ko, Young-Soo Kim Background and Purpose Increasing ozone concentrations have been known to damage human health and ecosystems. Although ozone tends to display diurnal variation, most studies have reported only on the association between daily ozone concentrations and ischemic stroke occurrence on the same day, or with a 1-day lag. We investigated the effect of the diurnal variation of ozone on ischemic stroke occurrence during the same day. Methods We included a consecutive series of 1,734 patients from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2014, at a single tertiary hosp...

Stroke and Risks of Development and Progression of Kidney Diseases and End-Stage Renal Disease: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study
by Chia-Lin Wu, Chun-Chieh Tsai, Chew-Teng Kor, Der-Cherng Tarng, Ie-Bin Lian, Tao-Hsiang Yang, Ping-Fang Chiu, Chia-Chu Chang Background There is little information about the association between stroke and kidney diseases. We aimed to investigate the impact of stroke on long-term renal outcomes. Methods In this large population-based retrospective cohort study, we identified 100,353 subjects registered in the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from January 1, 2000, through December 31, 2012, including 33,451 stroke patients and 66,902 age-, sex- and Charlson’s comorbidity index score-matched controls....

Stroke sensitivity in the aged: sex chromosome complement vs. gonadal hormones.
Abstract Stroke is a sexually dimorphic disease. Elderly women not only have higher stroke incidence than age-matched men, but also have poorer recovery and higher morbidity and mortality after stroke. In older, post-menopausal women, gonadal hormone levels are similar to that of men. This suggests that tissue damage and functional outcomes are influenced by biologic sex (XX vs. XY) rather than the hormonal milieu at older ages. We employed the Four Core Genotype (FCG) mouse model to study the contribution of sex chromosome complement and gonadal hormones to stroke sensitivity in aged mice in which the testis dete...

The Short- and Long-Term Risk of Stroke after Herpes Zoster: A Meta-Analysis
ConclusionThe results of our study demonstrated that herpes zoster was associated with a higher risk of stroke, but the risks decreased along with the time after herpes zoster.

3-Hydroxi-anthranilic acid is early expressed in stroke
Using an immunohistochemical technique, we have studied the distribution of 3-OH-anthranilic acid (3-HAA) in the rat brain. Our study was carried out in control animals and in rats in which a stroke model (single transient middle cerebral artery occlusion) was performed. A monoclonal antibody directed against 3-HAA was also developed. 3-HAA was exclusively observed in the infarcted regions (ipsilateral striatum/cerebral cortex), 2, 5 and 21 days after the induction of stroke. In control rats and in the contralateral side of the stroke animals, no immunoreactivity for 3-HAA was visualized. Under pathological conditions (fro...

Impact of level and patterns of alcohol drinking on coronary heart disease and stroke burden in Argentina
ConclusionsIn Argentina, the cardioprotective effect of regular and moderate alcohol drinking is slightly larger than the harmful impact of binge drinking on CVD. However, considering global deleterious effects of alcohol in public health, policies to reduce binge drinking should be enforced, especially for young people. Studies are still needed to elucidate effects on cardiovascular health.

Isoflurane preconditioning inhibits the effects of tissue-type plasminogen activator on brain endothelial cell in an in vitro model of ischemic stroke.
In this study, we used oxygen/glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R) condition to mimic an ischemic stroke in vitro. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) activity was measured in endothelial cell media. Also, neuronal cell culture was performed to investigate the effect of pretreated isoflurane on the neuronal cell survival after tPA-induced injury during OGD/R. Isoflurane pretreatment prevented tPA-induced MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity and suppressed tPA-triggered LRP/NF-κB/Cox-2 signaling after OGD/R. Neuronal cells, incubated with endothelial cell conditioned medium (EC-CM) after tPA + OGD/R, showed upregulation of pro-apop...

Stroke in HIV-infected individuals with and without HCV coinfection in Spain in the combination antiretroviral therapy era
by Alejandro Alvaro-Meca, Juan Berenguer, Asunci ón Díaz, Dariela Micheloud, Teresa Aldámiz-Echevarría, Chiara Fanciulli, Salvador Resino The incidence of stroke in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected individuals has been well analyzed in recent epidemiological studies. However, little is known about the specific contribution of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection to stroke among HIV-infected individuals. The aims of this st udy were to analyze trends in the incidence rates of stroke in HIV-infected individuals during the combination antiretroviral (cART) era in Spain and to categorize them by the presence or ...

Protective Effects of the Angiotensin II AT2 Receptor Agonist Compound 21 in Ischemic Stroke: A Nose-to-Brain Delivery Approach
Significant neuroprotective effects of angiotensin II type 2 (AT2) receptor agonists in ischemic stroke have been previously demonstrated in multiple studies.  However, the routes of agonist application used in these pre-clinical studies, direct intracerebroventricular and systemic administration, are unsuitable for translation to humans; in the latter case because AT2 receptor agonists are blood brain barrier (BBB) impermeable. To circumvent this problem, in the current study we utilized the nose-to-brain (N2B) route of administration to bypass the blood brain barrier and deliver the selective AT2 receptor agonist Co...

Research Articles Brain-released alarmins and stress response synergize in accelerating atherosclerosis progression after stroke
Stroke induces a multiphasic systemic immune response, but the consequences of this response on atherosclerosis—a major source of recurrent vascular events—have not been thoroughly investigated. We show that stroke exacerbates atheroprogression via alarmin-mediated propagation of vascular inflammation. The prototypic brain-released alarmin high-mobility group box 1 protein induced monocyte and endothelial activation via the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE)–signaling cascade and increased plaque load and vulnerability. Recruitment of activated monocytes via the CC-chemokine ligand 2&ndas...

Automated detection of parenchymal changes of ischemic stroke in non-contrast computer tomography: A fuzzy approach
Publication date: August 2018 Source:Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, Volume 45 Author(s): A. Davis, N. Gordillo, E. Montseny, F.X. Aymerich, M. López-Córdova, J. Mej’ia, L. Ortega, B. Mederos The detection of ischemic changes is a primary task in the interpretation of brain Computer Tomography (CT) of patients suffering from neurological disorders. Although CT can easily show these lesions, their interpretation may be difficult when the lesion is not easily recognizable. The gold standard for the detection of acute stroke is highly variable and depends on the experience of physicians. This research proposes ...
