Impact of D-dimer levels for short-term or long-term outcomes in cryptogenic stroke patients
ConclusionsIncreased D-dimer levels at admission were associated with mortality at discharge in cryptogenic stroke patients. In addition, high D-dimer levels were also associated with long-term outcomes in cryptogenic stroke patients with RLS.

When to Screen Ischaemic Stroke Patients for Cancer
Conclusions: Active cancer was found in 5% of our ischemic stroke patients. We found that a clinical score comprising elevated D-dimer ≥3 mg/L, lower Hb ≤12.0 g/dL and previous or current smoking is feasible for predicting active cancer in ischemic stroke patients.Cerebrovasc Dis

Intracerebroventricular administration of cigarette smoke condensate induced generalized seizures reduced by muscarinic receptor antagonist in rats.
Abstract Tobacco smoking is considered the greatest risk factor for early death caused by noncommunicable diseases. Currently, there are more than one billion tobacco smokers in the world predisposed to many diseases including heart attack, stroke, cancer, and premature birth or birth defects related to the consumption of cigarettes. However, studies on the association between tobacco smoking and seizures or epilepsy are insufficient and not well documented. In the present study, the authors examined the convulsive effects of the intracerebroventricular administration of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC, 2μl/Rat) ...

Prospective Study of Fasting Blood Glucose and Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Risk Clinical Sciences
The objective of the current study was to examine the potential impact of long-term fasting blood glucose concentration on subsequent risk of ICH.Methods—This prospective study included 96 110 participants of the Kailuan study, living in Kailuan community, Tangshan city, China, who were free of cardiovascular diseases and cancer at baseline (2006). Fasting blood glucose concentration was measured in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. Updated cumulative average fasting blood glucose concentration was used as primary exposure of the current study. Incident ICH from 2006 to 2015 was confirmed by review of medical records.Results...

Midt-Term Results after Fast-Track Prophylactic Carotid Surgery Program: The Risk of Overlooking Occult Cancer
Most guidelines recommend fast-track carotid endarterectomy (CEA) within 14 days of the last ischemic event. Long-term survival after fast-track CEA is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the fast-track CEA program in our region was associated with a reduced or increased 2-year survival and overall complication rate in our population.

Substitution of Linoleic Acid for Other Macronutrients and the Risk of Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study suggests that replacing saturated fatty acid, glycemic carbohydrate, or monounsaturated fatty acid with linoleic acid may be associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke.

Whole Grain Consumption and Risk of Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Although overall consumption of whole grains was not associated with lower risk of ischemic stroke, greater consumption of whole grain cold breakfast cereal and bran was significantly associated with a lower risk of ischemic stroke. More studies are needed to replicate these associations between individual whole grain foods and risk of ischemic stroke among other populations.

Do whole body vibration exercises affect lower limbs neuromuscular activity in populations with a medical condition? A systematic review.
CONCLUSION: By the use of sEMG it was verified that WBVE elicits muscle activation in diseased population. These results may lead to the definition of exercise protocols to maintain or increase muscular activation. However, due to the heterogeneity of methods among studies, there is currently no consensus on the sEMG signal processing. These strategies might also induce effects on muscle strength, balance and flexibility in these and other illnesses. PMID: 29172012 [PubMed - in process]

Which Patients With Ischemic Stroke and Insulin Resistance May Benefit From Pioglitazone?
The Insulin Resistance Intervention After Stroke (IRIS) trial has reported that treating insulin resistance with the peroxisome proliferator –activated receptor γ agonist pioglitazone hydrochloride reduced recurrent stroke or myocardial infarction (MI) by about one-fourth compared with placebo (pioglitazone, 9.0% vs placebo, 11.8%; hazard ratio [HR], 0.76; 95% CI, 0.62-0.93) in 3876 patients with recent (<6 months) ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack and insulin resistance but without diabetes, heart failure, or bladder cancer. Pioglitazone was also associated with less incident diabetes vs placebo (3.8% vs ...

Depression in the Context of Medical Disorders: New Pharmacological Pathways Revisited
In conclusion a hypothetic model for the implication of actual findings in everyday clinical practice is proposed. In this context personalized treatment could be used to tailor treatment to specific individuals according to their clinical endophenotypes. Moreover a potential target for the development of novel intervention strategies might be used.Neurosignals 2017;25:54 –73
