Extra-virgin olive oil for potential prevention of Alzheimer disease.
Authors: Román GC, Jackson RE, Reis J, Román AN, Toledo JB, Toledo E Abstract Observational epidemiological studies provide valuable information regarding naturally occurring protective factors observed in populations with very low prevalences of vascular disease. Between 1935 and 1965, the Italian-American inhabitants of Roseto (Pennsylvania, USA) observed a traditional Italian diet and maintained half the mortality rates from myocardial infarction compared with neighboring cities. In the Seven Countries Study, during 40years (1960-2000) Crete maintained the lowest overall mortality rates and coronary heart dise...

Endovascular Therapy for Concurrent Cardio-Cerebral Infarction in a Patient With Trousseau Syndrome
Only a few patients have been reported to undergo endovascular therapy for Trousseau syndrome. This is the first report of a patient with Trousseau syndrome who developed synchronous cardiocerebral infarction and underwent endovascular therapy for both. A 55-year-old woman with Trousseau syndrome arising from stage IV ovarian cancer presented with consciousness disturbance, aphasia, and right hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed acute cerebral infarction limited to the left basal ganglia and occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery (MCA). Electrocardiography showed ST elevation in leads II, III, and aVF with ...

Determination of Clinical Cut-Off Values for Serum Cystatin C Levels to Predict Ischemic Stroke Risk
Background: The association between cystatin C and risk of ischemic stroke is inconsistent and the cut-off values of cystatin C are diverse in different articles. We aimed to investigate the association between cystatin C levels and the development of ischemic stroke and to explore the clinical cut-off values of serum cystatin C levels for ischemic stroke. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 7658 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study who were free of cardiovascular diseases and cancer at baseline.

Stroke-Like Presentation of Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration: a Single-Center Experience and Review of the Literature
We report herein incidence and clinical features of hyperacute onset PCD, a vertebrobasilar stroke mimic. We performed a retrospective analysis of all suspected PCD cases referred to the Udine University Hospital between 2009 and 2017. Our center provides the only neuroimmunology laboratory for three provinces of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Italy (983,190 people as of January 1, 2017). Inclusion criteria were (1) abrupt onset of neurological symptoms; (2) initial consideration of a vascular etiology; (3) final diagnosis of “definite PCD.” We also carried out a systematic review of the literature in order to ident...

Neutrophil ‐to‐lymphocyte ratio predicts hemorrhagic transformation in ischemic stroke: A meta‐analysis
ConclusionA high NLR can predict HT and 3 ‐month mortality in patients with AIS. Regardless of the country of origin and the sampling time, an NLR with a cutoff value of 7.5–11 was independently associated with HT in AIS patients.

Recent advances in the therapeutic uses of chondroitinase ABC.
Abstract Many studies, using pre-clinical models of SCI, have demonstrated the efficacy of chondroitinase ABC as a treatment for spinal cord injury and this has been confirmed in laboratories worldwide and in several animal models. The aim of this review is report the current state of research in the field and to compare the relative efficacies of these new interventions to improve outcomes in both acute and chronic models of SCI. We also report new methods of chondroitinase delivery and the outcomes of two clinical trials using the enzyme to treat spinal cord injury in dogs and disc herniation in human patients. ...

STIR-Net: Deep Spatial-Temporal Image Restoration Net for Radiation Reduction in CT Perfusion
In this study, we finalize extensive experiments to appraise the image restoration performance at different levels of tube current and spatial and temporal resolution scales. The results demonstrate the capability of our STIR-Net to restore high-quality scans at as low as 11% of absorbed radiation dose of the current imaging protocol, yielding an average of 10% improvement for perfusion maps compared to the patch-based log likelihood method.

Safety and Efficacy of Reperfusion Therapies for Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients With Active Malignancy
Background and Purpose: Epidemiological correlations between active malignancy (AM) and acute ischemic stroke (AIS) are well-established. However, the effect of reperfusion strategies, particularly mechanical thrombectomy (MT), has been barely investigated in patients with AIS and AM. We aim to evaluate safety and efficacy of reperfusion strategies in such patients. Materials and Methods: We performed a case-control analysis comparing patients with AM and AIS (AM group) to a group of cancer-free patients with AIS (control group).

Intra-arterial thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke patients with active cancer
ConclusionsAlthough baseline characteristics and recanalisation rate after IAT up to 24  h after stroke onset were similar between acute ischaemic stroke patients with active cancer and without any cancer, stroke-related death and short-term outcome were significantly poorer in patients with active cancer than the controls. Post-procedural haemorrhage and active cancer itself were ind ependent predictors of a decrease in functional independence at 3 months.

Temporal Trends in the Use of Acute Recanalization Therapies for Ischemic Stroke in Patients with Cancer
Objective: We sought to characterize the US nationwide temporal trends in recanalization therapy utilization for ischemic stroke among patients with and without cancer. Methods: We identified all acute ischemic stroke (AIS) hospitalizations in the National Inpatient Sample from January 1, 1998 to September 30, 2015. The primary exposure was solid or hematologic cancer. The primary outcome was use of intravenous thrombolysis. The secondary outcome was use of endovascular therapy (EVT). Results: Among 9,508,804 AIS hospitalizations, 503,510 (5.3%) involved cancer patients.

Predictors of mortality and disability in stroke-associated pneumonia
AbstractWhilst stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is common and associated with poor outcomes, less is known about the determinants of these adverse clinical outcomes in SAP. To identify the factors that influence mortality and morbidity in SAP. Data for patients with SAP (n = 854) were extracted from a regional Hospital Stroke Register in Norfolk, UK (2003–2015). SAP was defined as pneumonia occurring within 7 days of admission by the treating clinicians. Mutlivariable regression models were constructed to assess factors influencing survival and the level of di sability at discharge using modified Rankin Scale [mRS]...
