Childhood Stroke: Results of 130 Children From a Reference Center in Central Anatolia, Turkey
Conclusion: Tuberculous meningitis is still a risk factor for arterial ischemic stroke in Turkey. Arterial ischemic stroke in the first year of life and recurrent arterial ischemic stroke represent poor prognostic features.

Risk of epilepsy in stroke patients receiving acupuncture treatment: a nationwide retrospective matched-cohort study
Conclusions Stroke patients who received acupuncture treatment had a reduced risk of epilepsy compared with those not receiving acupuncture treatment. However, the protective effects associated with acupuncture treatment require further validation in prospective cohort studies.

Improving cognitive outcomes for pediatric stroke
Purpose of review: The past 20 years have seen a 35% increase in prevalence of pediatric stroke. Contrary to widely held views, children do not recover better than adults. This review explores the impact of pediatric stroke on cognitive domains, including intellectual and executive functions, memory and behavior, and the influence of age, lesion characteristics, and comorbidities on outcome. Recent findings: Cognitive problems occur in up to half of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke survivors. Single-center studies have shown intelligence quotient scores skewed to the lower end of the average range, with greater impairment ...

Presumed perinatal ischemic stroke: risk factors and clinical and radiological findings.
CONCLUSIONS: Investigation in risk factors implicated in presumed perinatal ischemic stroke is required to develop prevention strategies. Delay in diagnosis is higher in periventricular venous infarction group. PMID: 28608354 [PubMed - in process]

Clinical study on anti-epileptic drug with B vitamins for the treatment of epilepsy after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Anti-epilepsy drugs combined with B vitamins can improve epilepsy control after stroke and reduce new stroke occurrence. This effect may be associated with stability of plasma ADMA levels. Vitamin B12 may be better than vitamin B complex in the treatment of epilepsy after stroke. PMID: 28770947 [PubMed - in process]

Early seizures after ischemic stroke: focus on thrombolysis.
CONCLUSION: ESs are rare complications of acute stroke with substantial burden. A significant proportion can be presented at the onset of stroke requiring an extensive diagnostic workup. PMID: 30915936 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Correlation of blood biomarkers with early-onset seizures after an acute stroke event
ConclusionHigher NCAM and lower TNF-R1 levels may help predict the occurrence of early seizures. The combined use of these biomarkers and clinical variables could be useful for identifying patients at risk of seizures.“This article is part of the Special Issue “Seizures & Stroke”

Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults
This article reviews current knowledge on epidemiology, risk factors and causes, diagnostic considerations, management, and prognosis of ischemic stroke in young adults (those 55 years old and younger). RECENT FINDINGS The incidence of ischemic stroke in young adults has been increasing since the 1980s, which has occurred in parallel with increasing prevalence of vascular risk factors and substance abuse among the younger population. Young adults have a considerably wider range of risk factors than older patients, including age-specific factors such as pregnancy/puerperium and oral contraceptive use. Behavioral risk fac...

Misdiagnosis of lamotrigine toxicity as posterior circulation transient ischemic attack or stroke.
CONCLUSION: Emergency departments will frequently call a stroke alert for patients taking LTG and presenting with symptoms consistent with LTG toxicity, particularly in seniors at greater risk of stroke. This adds not only expense but also radiation and contrast exposure from computed tomography (CT) studies. We recommend that a rapid LTG assay be made available and always ordered in patients receiving LTG, avoiding the considerable expense of an unnecessary stroke evaluation. Antiepileptic drugs for the primary and secondary prevention of seizures after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Currently, there is insufficient evidence to support the routine use of antiepileptic drugs for the primary or secondary prevention of seizures after stroke. Further well-conducted research is needed for this important clinical problem. PMID: 24464793 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
