Neurological deterioration in the acute phase of minor ischemic stroke is an independent predictor of poor outcomes at 1 year: results from the China National Stroke Registry (CNSR).
CONCLUSIONS: The risk of ND in the acute phase is high in patients with MIS. ND in the acute phase is an independent predictor for poor outcomes at 12 months post-stroke onset. PMID: 24034080 [PubMed - in process]

Carotid intima-media thickness in plaque-free area, carotid plaque and risk of ischemic stroke in high-risk population of North China.
CONCLUSION: Screening of carotid artery especially for carotid artery plaques should be taken into consideration among people with high risk of ischemic stroke. PMID: 28759189 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Tag Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in CCL11 Gene on Risk of Subtypes of Ischemic Stroke in Xinjiang Han Populations.
CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that the CCL11 gene could play an important role in the pathogenesis of lacunar stroke and LAA stroke in the Han population of China. PMID: 28873081 [PubMed - in process]

Usefulness of cardiometabolic index for the estimation of ischemic stroke risk among general population in rural China.
CONCLUSION: The strong and independent association of CMI with ischemic stroke in females, in comparison with the much lesser degree in males, provides further insight to better stratify by sex in investigations of ischemic stroke and solidly corroborates the potential role of ischemic stroke prevention targeted at CMI. Dose-Response Relationship Between Thrombin-Activatable Fibrinolysis Inhibitor (TAFI) and Stroke: A Chinese Case-Control Study.
CONCLUSIONS There was a definite correlation between TAFI levels and stroke in this Chinese population, and with the increase of TAFI levels, the relative risk of stroke or ischemic stroke first increased and then decreased. PMID: 28890533 [PubMed - in process]

IJERPH, Vol. 14, Pages 1091: Ambient Air Pollution and Risk for Ischemic Stroke: A Short-Term Exposure Assessment in South China
This study aimed to investigate the association between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and risk of ischemic strokes in Guangzhou, the most densely-populated city in south China, using a large-scale multicenter database of stroke hospital admissions. Daily counts of ischemic stroke admissions over the study years 2013–2015 were obtained from the Guangzhou Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease Event Surveillance System. Daily particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and meteorological data were collected. The associations betwee...

Predicting functional outcomes of posterior circulation acute ischemic stroke in first 36  h of stroke onset
In conclusion, both the PC-ASPECTS and NIHSS help clinicians predict functional outcomes. PC-ASPECTS >  7 is a helpful discriminator for achieving favorable functional outcome prediction in posterior circulation acute ischemic stroke.

Characterizing Beliefs about Stroke and Walking for Exercise among Seniors from Four Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities
We described and compared seniors ’ stroke-related health beliefs among four racial/ethnic communities to inform a culturally-tailored stroke prevention walking intervention. Specific attention was paid to how seniors combined pathophysiology-based biomedical beliefs with non-biomedical beliefs. We conducted twelve language-concor dant, structured focus groups with African American, Chinese American, Korean American, and Latino seniors aged 60 years and older with a history of hypertension (n = 132) to assess stroke-related health beliefs. Participants were asked their beliefs about stroke mechanism and prevention st...

Very early versus delayed mobilisation after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: VEM, which usually involved first mobilisation within 24 hours of stroke onset, did not increase the number of people who survived or made a good recovery after their stroke. VEM may have reduced the length of stay in hospital by about one day, but this was based on low-quality evidence. Based on the potential hazards reported in the single largest RCT, the sensitivity analysis of trials commencing mobilisation within 24 hours, and the NMA, there was concern that VEM commencing within 24 hours may carry an increased risk, at least in some people with stroke. Given the uncertainty around these effect estimates,...

Trends in stroke incidence among elderly low-income residents of rural China: a population-based study from 1992 to 2016.
Abstract In China, >70% of stroke deaths occur in people aged ≥65 years. However, trends in the stroke incidence among elderly people are unclear. We aimed to determine trends in the stroke incidence among elderly people in rural China. This was a population-based surveillance study conducted in Tianjin, China. Stroke events and all deaths were registered annually. Trends and annual proportion of change in incidence of first-ever stroke were evaluated from 1992 to 2016. The age-standardized incidence of first-ever stroke increased annually by 3.7% overall in elderly people (2.7% for men; 5.0% for women; all P...

A Systematic Review of Neuroprotective Efficacy and Safety of DL-3-N-Butylphthalide in Ischemic Stroke.
Abstract DL-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) is widely used as a neuroprotective drug for ischemic stroke in China. There is, however, no established evidence on its efficacy and safety for patients with ischemic stroke. We, therefore, conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Major databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials that assessed the efficacy and safety of NBP on ischemic stroke, reporting outcomes among patients treated with NBP alone or combined with standard anti-ischemic stroke drugs vs. standard anti-ischemic stroke drugs. Continuous data were validated, extracted and synthesized...
