Memphis Mobile Stroke Unit Saves Lives
A year after a mobile stroke unit hit the streets of Memphis, officials say it is saving lives by cutting the time it takes to treat stroke patients. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center began using the 14-ton ambulance last year as part of a three-year controlled study. The unit has a CT scanner that can X-ray images of the brain, and is equipped to provide early fluids to stroke patients and dye blood vessels to determine the type of stroke the patient has had. Relationship between Presence of Visceral Infarction and Functional Outcome among Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke

Alcohol Consumption and Stroke Risk in Men: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Rural Tianjin, China
Conclusions: These findings suggest that low-dose alcohol consumption may decrease the risk of ischemic strokes among men. Even so, the adverse effects of alcohol on the liver and pancreas cannot be ignored. Additionally, the effects of alcohol consumption on stroke risk vary with age, protecting against ischemic and total strokes among males ≥55 years old. Nevertheless, recommending light drinking and its potential health benefits should not be generalized to men of all ages.Neuroepidemiology

Identification of Acute Stroke Using Quantified Brain Electrical Activity
ConclusionsDespite a small population and the use of a classifier without the benefit of training on a stroke population, these data suggest that a rapidly acquired, easy‐to‐use system to assess brain electrical activity at the time of evaluation of acute stroke could be a valuable adjunct to current clinical practice.

Predictors of early infection in cerebral ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSION: Patients with older age, tube feeding, lower conscious level, worse baseline stroke severity, large cerebral infarcts in CT scan, and increased IL-10 serum level were more susceptible to infection. The baseline serum level of IL-10 ≥ 14.5 pg/ ml and the size of infarct area > 3.5 cm3 were the independent predictors of PSI. PMID: 27453748 [PubMed - in process]

Calcium supplements linked to post-stroke dementia in women
Conclusion The media paint this as a troubling study for older women who take calcium to strengthen their bones. However the small size of the study (only 98 women took calcium supplements, and only 14 of those got dementia) and its observational nature mean that we cannot rely on the results. Improving acute stroke care in regional hospitals: clinical evaluation of the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine program.
CONCLUSIONS: Telemedicine has provided Victorian regional hospitals access to expert care for emergency department patients with suspected acute stroke. Molecular imaging of inflammation in the brain-heart axis after ischemic stroke: comparison of two murine stroke models.
Conclusions: In contrast to topical ET-1 application after craniotomy, the intravascular MCAo model enables imaging studies of brain-heart networking after stroke, which evokes elevated TSPO PET signal in both brain and heart. The severity of cerebral ischemic damage may contribute to cardiac dysfunction via systemic inflammatory networking.
